Urban Progressive Privilege: Angst

Elon Musk buying Twitter is generating some…exaggerated reactions from progs:

The idea that they are not, in fact, an inevitable force of history seems to confuse and frighten them.

Interesting thread by Yishan (he ran Reddit) — tells you all you need to know about why Elon is full of it …

Musk continues to demonstrate he has no clue what “free speech” actually is.

To be honest, in a way, Jarvis is not wrong. The resistance is growing to the creepy perverse psychos that became normalized during our own Weimar regime, the last 20 years culminating in the Biden administration.

Could anything be more Weimar than drag queens at the public library for children’s story hour? Summer camps to teach kids how to masturbate? The disconnect between gender and sex in children’s sports? The denigration of normal families? The efforts to normalize pedophilia? The societal acceptance and prevalence of groomers in the society at large and specifically in the schools? The fight against laws that prevent grooming and pedophilic behavior in the schools?

Liberals insist “free speech” on social media is not only impossible, but undesireable as well.

Okay, how about “fair speech,” or possibly “balanced speech,” or maybe “speech without an obvious political bias;” are those possible or desireable?

The linked piece in E’s 8:19 is sleight-of-hand misdirection. The author claims people aren’t banned for politics, but for behavior. Nonsense. People are banned for politics using the fig leaf of behavior. And we know it because the policy only works one direction – always punishing Conservatives, always excusing Liberals.

“You questioned the integrity of the election, which is sedition, so you’re banned for attempting to overthrow the government (behavior) not for your politics (asking questions).” That’s an obvious lie. Nobody believes it. Conservative political speech is being suppressed precisely because it’s conservative political speech; Liberal political speech is never suppressed that way.

That’s what Musk is talking about when he wants to restore “free speech” to social media. That’s why Liberals are so dead-set against it. They are terrified what would happen if social media content wasn’t filtered, sanitized, regulated, coordinated, and approved by Deep State Central. People might learn what’s really going on, might learn they’ve been lied to, might start thinking for themselves, might decide it’s time to set things right. And God only knows where that might lead.

Pitchforks are no longer a common household tool and torches are a fire hazard, but there are lamp posts on every street.

^^ Yes — apparently Mickey Mouse is a groomer too. Isn’t the Florida bill stripping Disney of its special tax district a case of simple viewpoint discrimination? And it’s being championed by the “free speech absolutists”?
Using state power explicitly to punish a company the governor believes is insufficiently supportive of him and his party.

What’s disappointing is the number of people that I thought were serious people who have just seemingly given up on small government and embraced using government power to hurt their enemies.

Elon Musk unveils $46bn financing package to fund Twitter bid —Tesla billionaire says he will personally provide $21bn of equity for the deal
    https://www.wsj.com/articles/elon-musk-says-he-has-commitments-for-46-5-billion-in-financing-for-twitter-deal-11650549097

That seems to imply about 55-60m more TSLA shares being pledged for the margin loan. 88m already pledged… So ~145m out of 173m, or ~80% of his shares and 15% of all shares outstanding! Totally normal…

Let’s see if Taylor Lorenz suffers any consequences for her behavior, especially now that people with the same name as, but no connection to, the Libs of TikTok page are being threatened by the behavior of crazy lefties. In fact, let’s see if the violent and threatening users have their accounts shut down.

Republican Speaker Denny Hastert is a convicted child molester, Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz is under investigation for sex with a minor, and Republican Senate nominee Roy Moore preyed on underage girls. So why does it seem like it’s Democrats who have a grooming problem?

  14. Mammuthus Primigenesis Avatar

    Speculation is useless.
What we know is that Musk called Twitter “the de facto public square” and his enemies aren’t disputing his claim. Instead they say that they have the right to set the speech rules for the de facto public square as they see fit.
So Stacey Abrams keeps her twitter account, but not Trump.

A billion-dollar corporation thrusts itself into politics in an attempt to undermine change the state’s morl culture and possibly influence the outcome of an election.

Local legislators, resentful of the corporation’s meddlesome efforts, decide the corporation is no longer entitled to enjoy the perqs of special interest legislation.

To Liberals, this is exactly the same as Twitter banning a user who questioned the integrity of the election and proves ‘cancel culture’ goes both ways.

William F. Buckley’s woman-crossing-the-street analogy was never plainer.

Musk is arguing to Twitter shareholders that, with Dorsey off the board, the remaining board members actually own very little Twitter stock, so the interests of the board are no longer aligned with the share holders. Twitter’s board members are basically highly paid employees.

What you’re trying to solve for with content moderation is human nature and societal level problems. And no one’s been able to solve those ever, and a guy building rockets doesn’t magically know how to fix those kinds of problems. Because it is not topics that are censored. It is behavior. Trump was not de-platformed for being right-wing or his politics.

The world would be a better place if people didn’t group up and become bigger and bigger assholes on social media. But, we’re not there yet, and Musk has no solution for that problem.

Trump used their platforms to do something they never expect a user to be able to do: Incite an insurrection to stop the lawful and orderly transfer of power. It had nothing to do with free speech, or agreeing/disagreeing with your politics.

Twitter’s monthly number of active users has been almost flat since 2015. Advertising revenue is increasing at a slow rate.
It is unlikely that Twitter will ever deliver a robust ROI, stock shenanigans aside.
I don’t know why anyone would be proud to work there. I am still not certain what Musk expects to get out of the deal, other than control of a major speech platform.

Woolly— I swear it’s like you have this psychological need to publicly show your constant support of terrorists, bigots and assholes. Certainly a strange mental condition but relatively harmless so knock yourself out cheering for the worst of humanity I guess.

Musk stated in the recent interview at TED that he’s not interested in it as a business but rather that it is the de facto town square and wants to engage the ability for people to speak their mind.

My take: Elon Musk is overindexing on the weight of Twitter as a town square, perhaps because it is his favorite place to talk (confirmation bias).

Note the passive construction. Twitter doesn’t choose to censor certain people, these people force Twitter to censor them.
If Twitter is taking responsibility for what they publish, take away Twitter’s CDA section 230 and let the libel and defamation lawsuits roll!

MP, if Musk takes over and keeps true to his word, he will gain conservative subscribers. And, he will not lose many libturds because they will stay on to be “moral objectors”, just like trollbots here on this blog. So as I said before, I can see a case for a financial upside if Musk takes over and keeps to his word to free the platform.

” . . . Incite an insurrection to stop the lawful and orderly transfer of power.”

That was Twitter’s stated reason. But Trump did not incite an insurrection; therefore, the stated reason is an false statement of fact made with intent to deceive the listener. In other words, a lie.

Since the stated reason is a lie, it’s fair to conclude the real reason is his politics, exactly as conservatives have said all along, exactly what Elon Musk has been talking about, and exactly as Liberals are desperate to deny. It’s not about freedom of speech, it’s about control of speech, and Liberals cannot let that go.

So why does it seem like it’s Democrats who have a grooming problem?

Because mentally ill, sexual degenerates overwhelmingly vote DemocrAT, and only DemocrATs are defending child groomers. Every single public school teacher/groomer that Libs of Tic Toc has outed are leftists; 100%. I’d bet my next paycheck that a deep dive into the voting habits of Catholic priests who’ve been convicted of pederasty would show 100% DemocrAT votes.

I have never, not once encountered anyone claiming to be a Republican, or conservative for that matter, excuse the rampant child exploitation that has been carried out in pop culture, leftist media or Hollywood movies peep shows. Not even the ones that have been caught engaging in it themselves.

Grooming and pedophilia; it’s a leftist thang.

Can you imagine the flood of tears that will accompany the loss of their ability to mob up on someone they don’t like and get them tossed? The triggering; the angst; the stream of spittle flecked invective…especially from filthy female leftists.

Most recent polling indicates DeSantis is +8 to +16 in Florida. I suspect he’ll do better than he did in ‘18. But perhaps the Nancy Pelosi endorsement of Charlie Crist will make ‘em change their minds in Ocala.

    Enron Musk..

There. Is. No. Free. Speech. Issue.

Read it more slowly if you didn’t get it the first time.

At least in the US, the Constitution sets out the protections that are afforded the people: the premise is founded on so-called “negative rights” dating back to the Enlightenment. We have freedoms “from” unwarranted intrusions on our liberties as enshrined in the Constitution. Especially from the government.

A private company like Twitter does nothing to undermine anyone’s exercise of their First Amendment rights. No one is being muzzled in a way that raises “free speech” concerns.

A problem arises if someone tries to dictate to Twitter — other than its owners — how it should design and conduct its content moderation policy. And there will always be a content moderation policy. Which is not easy.
