Death Spiral

Joe Soucheray on the Chauvin Trial and Minneapolis:

Yes, the trial, and the attendant protests, could be the end of Minneapolis. There is no political strength in place to save it. The council even exudes a vibe that suggests they are more concerned about the safety and convenience of protesters than their own citizenry.

The council cannot open an intersection because of their apparent fealty to those who occupy it. What are they going to do if rioters decide that they are going to take over six or seven square blocks of downtown, maybe the Nicollet Mall? This city let a police station burn. This is a city that called for help too late back in May 2020.

Minneapolis city council president Lisa Bender famously said that expecting public safety is a “privilege” – to which every taxpayer in that city should be saying “Yes. It Is. A ‘privilege’ I, whatever my race, creed or belief, pay through the nose for. Now provide it, stat, or get out of office and quite wasting our time”.

But they don’t ,and they won’t, and when Lisa Bender leaves the Council she, like Frey and even Alondra Cano, will be replaced by someone worse. That’s cynicism talking – well, not just cynicism. It’s the way Minneapolis politics is set up. It’s the way politics go wherever a small minority, committed to getting power at whatever cost, get their way. It’s the apotheosis of Urban Progressive Privilege.

Not even a complete apocalypse is going to change that.

  1. Soucheray has been squirting tears for 30 years about the decline of the TC, St. Paul in particular. He’s had a front row seat, watched it devolve from a nice, wholesome Mid-Western city into a leftist cesspool as nasty as any in the country. He knows the machinations of city hall and the reprobates better than most.

I’d be remiss not to observe, that a fellow, a fellow with some self-respect and fortitude would have de-camped no later than 10 years ago when it was clear to anyone with an IQ above room temp that the reprobate conquest was absolute, and not going to change without a complete leveling of the city and exodus of the population. I mean, if the family ties are too strong, at least leave the Twin Cities for, I dunno, Afton.

As it stands, he’s in ground zero for Round II of blax proving how little White lives, and the top tier civilization they built, matter to them.

Maybe when a group of peaceful protesters make their way down his street, torch his cars and break out the windows of his house with bricks he’ll have an epiphany, if he survives…but I doubt it.

ngl…I’ve got no fucks to give.

  2. I think you’re too mean to Sooch, Doctor. Everything you say, as far as I’m concerned, is true, but I think the man is stunned, deer in the headlights. The ruination has taken place in the space of just two generations. Forty, fifty years ago he’s cheering for the old green and white of Hill-Murray, next thing you know “a group of peaceful protesters make their way down his street, torch his cars and break out the windows of his house with bricks”.

I don’t think the man is alone.

  3. It’s hard to abandon your home. I shouldn’t HAVE to flee like some refugee. I paid for this town. I built a life here. I deserve better.

It’s the reason people still live in tiny towns like Warba and Whalen (both of which, I’ve been to). There’s nothing there, no future, but it’s home.

  4. JD, you are not abandoning your home, your home abandoned you. You want to make a stand? Stop paying your taxes and take city to court. Each… And… Every… One… Of… You… MN living sad sacks.

  6. Warba is easy, from downtown Mpls take Central Avenue(65) north until you reach Highway 2, turn left, go a few miles and you are there.

My experience; the good thing about 65 from Cambridge to Hwy 2 is there are almost never any cops so if you aren’t worried about hitting a deer, or rarely, a moose, you can exceed the posted speed suggestions with impunity.

Now Togo on the other hand is pretty much a ghost town, but a good spot to hunt Whitetails.

  7. I like Sooch, jdm. Listened to him for years. But the jig is up. Hill-Murray is closed because of a manufactured crisis, and when it re-opens they’ll be celebrating debauchery.

Riffing on the foul mouthed Sandy Pappas was good fun back in the day, but Funtime is over. Garage Logic is an island of wholesome civilized people completely surrounded by mindless zombies who won’t be satisfied until it’s sacked.

He’s not saying anything any decent person isn’t thinking. We don’t need to hear how bad it is; we know.

He could be using his platform to rally the troops. Instead he chooses to throw himself down in a soggy pile. Got no time for him or his morose ilk.

  8. JD, life isn’t fair. Surprised I have to say it.

The situation in the TC is what it is; it’s not gonna get better, trust me. The only variable is what you decide to do about it.

I packed up my shit and got the fuck out of there 10 years ago; never regretted it for a second.

  9. Dr. Pete:

I’m glad you got out. I know lots of other people are leaving. I’m just a little slower. I’ll be like Tevye, pulling a wagon full of random household junk with little grandkids atop, following the stream of refugees heading for the warm and safe and prosperous land of . . . Iowa?

  10. Nothing wrong with Iowa, JD.

It’s got a lot more going for it than a 90% white population and miles of corn. There’s lots of really nice little towns down there where a guy can relax. As always though, there are reprobates in the larger cities that need to be put down harshly.
