Can The Center Hold?
By Mitch Berg
I’m not one of those conservatives that bags on teachers as his default setting. My mother’s parents were teachers. My dad was a great teacher. My little sister teaches. Three out of four of them voted or vote GOP. Teachers are as individual as anyone else.
Now, as an example, when bad cops – corrupt sergeants, mobbed-up detectives, thumpers on patrol, sadists in squad cars – emerge, the question pops up; why don’t the good cops do something about the bad cops? Why does the “thin blue line” seem to believe standing with a bad cop is more important than good civilians?
So – let’s take that (perfectly valid) logic and apply it to teachers. Why aren’t the good ones able to do something about teachers like this?
The question is only partly rhetorical.

Yea, she’s real tough, isn’t she? Talk is cheap and I’m wondering how she would react if she a. actually got sued by a parent or group of parents or b. lost her teaching credentials for breaking the law? Sounds to me like she needs to move to a communist controlled state, like New York or California.

None of these things were an issue for my kids at St. Agnes.
Latin was an issue.

When teachers realize they do not have to pay union dues, maybe they will wake up. Or wait… they are ALL WOKE! Alas, but for Mitch’s little sister there are no good teachers left. None… Not a single one…

I so agree Mitch, teaching is such an honorable profession. I wanted to be a teacher for a long time, but it never happened.
Here comes the “but monkey”: BUT, if there is any silver lining to this clusterfudge we have just been put through, it is to expose the teachers UNION for what it is: fascistic, evil, corrupt.

I can relate, Mitch. My mother was a teacher. In fact, she was a union leader in the 70s, and a rabid Democrat fighting the Republican “Man” in charge of the school district.
But times change, as does the nature of the various parties. These days, she favors outlawing teachers unions, having become appalled at what they’ve become. Classical liberals have become persona non grata in education and especially the unions, and that’s what she is.
@Kinlaw – long ago I wanted to be a teacher. But frankly, I quickly soured on that when I saw what the politics were in academe and decided that no matter how much I liked teaching, nothing was worth having to deal with university politics, beg for funding, etc. Besides, I *started* at a higher salary than a full professor, so economically it never made sense. Strangely enough, there was a lot more choice in what to work on in industry since I could always jump companies easily, which in academe is exceptionally difficult. Still, if teaching had been the main duty, I probably would have gone that way.

Perhaps St. Agnes is an outlier, but regrettably, even parochial schools are not immune from teachers quietly inserting their own values into the curriculum instead of what they’re supposed to teach. The whole deal here is a big reason why local accountability is such a big deal, as well as the freedom to make informed choices.
That noted, I’m quite frankly puzzled about why anyone would think that it was appropriate that drag queens and gender reassignment advocates ought to be teaching anyone about sexuality, let alone kindergartners.

The difference being, the vast majority of cops are good with a few bad apples. The vast majority of (PUBLIC SCHOOL) teachers are bad (where bad=leftist indoctrinators) with a few good apples.
Thus far, my kids’ school has mostly held out from indoctrination. I think a lot of that has to do with how many rich conservative parents pay to send their kids there.
