The Danger Of Guns

By Mitch Berg

Sometimes the wrong people get hold of them, and do stupid things, and then all sorts of innocent people get hurt.

And then when a citizen with a clean record uses his gun to shoot a pitbull mauling a neighborhood kid he ends up having his guns confiscated, being fined $1000 and facing jail (the authorities graciously waived the jail sentence in light of the guy saving the kid’s life).

I just read a story on one of the pop-up news sources (Yahoo, I think) about the memorial service that was just held for Adam Lanza’s mother Nancy. It was fairly benign, however the comments quickly took a turn towards the incident being her fault; the story also did not include the fact that she was killed by her son before her guns were taken.

It was interesting to note that all the (I assume) “inclusive” subscribers were quick to castigate a parent of a person with some type (still not sure what type) of functional mental condition.

In hindsight, Adam was far more damaged than I think everyone thought (including the school psychologists who must have been present throughout his academic career). Still, I suppose that the ease of laying all the blame at the feet of a dead “prepper” who cannot speak-up is hard to resist.

There still is a lot left to be explained. No, I’m not a denier. Everything must have happened as it was eventually portrayed. However, we are still working off a lot of unproven assumptions about the killer and his family.

Now that there’s a temporary freeze on the legislative opportunities that the tragedy promised, we might be able to learn more.
