Hussein: Dead Tyrant Walking
By Mitch Berg
Hussein’s death sentence has been upheld.
As I’ve written before, I think it was a mistake to “try” Saddam in a court, as though there were some doubt about the murderous nature of his regime, and that doubt could somehow be resolved by a judicial proceeding. I’ve also been critical of the manner in which the trial has been conducted. It has dragged on much too long and has far too often served as a platform for Saddam’s grandstanding.
It’s worth noting, at this time, that – ahem – it looks like my dead pool entry was, er, dead on, if all goes according to plan.

I agree with Hinderaker. It would have been best if after apprehending Saddam he had been turned over to Iraqi partisans who would have executed him within hours, if not minutes.
It served no good purpose to try Saddam. If the trial had resulted in anything less than a death sentence it would have been disastrous for the US. So has been the implication that the ‘trial’ was anything less than fair. By putting a bullet in his brain shortly after his apprehension the US would have sent the message that we are deadly serious about Iraq. Instead we look like a bunch of namby pamby transnational hand wringers.
