In the Quick Of The Night, You Reach For Your Moment…
By Mitch Berg
The Night Writer apparently whacked his head on the same thing I did, somewhere along the way:
It was a warm summer evening, in the gathering twilight that I like best when it is still light but the sky is beginning to gray and the lights of the cars and houses really seem to pop. I swung out onto the almost deserted highway and flipped over from radio to CD and was rewarded with a couple of songs from Springsteen’s Born to Run album.
The quality of light, the open road in front of me, a couple of anthems from my youth…it was as if a screen door slammed in my mind, a dress waved, and a vision danced across the porch as the radio played.
Cool!
Just one look, a whisper…
…and I’m off to Keegans!

Thunder Road. One of the handful of Springsteen songs I don’t find “cringeworthy”.
I actually like it a lot, especially Clarence’s sax at the end.

The company I work for had a car-motorcycle rally showing off old cars and bikes a couple of weeks ago.
One of the guys spent all his after work time fixing up this great old Mustang. He was very proud and was very exited to show it off to the group.
I’m not sure if the kids still race’m on Black Dog Road in Burnsville like when I was a kid but this really did ring true.
“Some guys they just give up living
And start dying little by little, piece by piece
Some guys come home from work and wash up
And go racin’ in the street”
Damn you Mitch, now I HAVE to waste an entire afternoon watching Springsteen bootlegs on YouTube!
