After a senseless tragedy, people – almost invariably conservatives – are told to never, ever dare to “politicize” it [1]
46 year old Anthony Nephew of Duluth apparently politicized his family’s tragedy for us over the weekend, murdering his wife and son, his ex-partner and son, and checking himself out afterward.
According to the London Daily Mail (far and away the best rouce for Minnesota news that doesn’t kiss the DFL’s ass):
[Nepohew] also appeared increasingly concerned about the prospect of a Trump-led government.
‘My mental health and the world can no longer peacefully coexist, and a lot of the reason is religion,’ he said in July.
‘I am terrified of religious zealots inflicting their misguided beliefs on me and my family. I have intrusive thoughts of being burned at the stake as a witch, or crucified on a burning cross.
‘Having people actually believe that I or my child are Satan or, the anti-Christ or whatever their favorite color of boogie man they are afraid are this week.’
He had also accused Republicans of ‘making it harder for women to leave’ domestic violence relationships, writing ‘Gilead here we come.’
Gilead is an apparent reference to the Handmaid’s Tale, a dystopian republic which overthew the United States and stripped away women’s rights.
Huh. So you mean a decade of saying a political candidate is the plague makes the least stable among us think he’s…a plague?
[1] Spurious references to Naziism and Fascism apparently excepted.
OK, so he’s concerned about domestic violence, so he hills both his first and his second family….call me weird, but I have this sneaking suspicion that he might have had a few screws loose to begin with, and the political end of things was just coincidental.
And a side note is “I wonder how we can spot this sort of thing before it goes metastatic?” Might be impossible, because if you “flag” everybody with a certain combination of tattoos, shaggy hair, multiple families, and the like, you’ve just flagged a very significant portion of the population.
Add to Trump’s to do list:
Make it easier to commit mentally ill persons so they don’t cause harm to themselves and others.
Read this book to learn how we got into this mess.

Yes! This would solve a lot of problems that the US is experiencing right now from drug abuse to crime to homelessness.
^ Can confirm, Mr Jones. Good book recommendation. And good policy recommendation too.
I encourage everyone to read First Ringer’s SITD column on Armistice Day. Timeless reminder just how long America has been Europe’s babysitter, and how many lives it cost.

I saw a headline last week about the vast number of suicides in America that immediately followed the Election. I’m skeptical about the number, but I’m not skeptical that a certain number of liberals were so scared by the results that they decided to “check out” in response. When I tried looking up how many suicides there have been in America since the Election 2024 (I didn’t use a date range), I saw several articles debunking the original Post reporting. But I also saw several “ally” outlets and such claim that LGBTQRSTUV youth calls to suicide and depression hotlines spiked by 700% last week. I’m sure that several skipped the hotline part of the process.
In a just world, the liberal scaremongers would at least feel shame for their contribution to the mental health crisis we have. Personally, I’d love to see a comprehensive study of mental health and political influences/affiliations. I know what I’d expect to find.
Smith;
I hate to admit it, but my 39 year old gay daughter, called me to scream at me that her life was over and that she’ll probably dead by the end of next year. The ultimate insult? When she told me, albeit under the influence of a couple of shots of Jim Beam, that she “wishes she had a dad like Tim Walz, that looked out for his kid”.
SmithStCrx, were you looking for something like this?

One other thought I had today is that too often, the left infantilizes people, a good example being voting. Instead of the old rules–register at the right place on time, look up your polling place and show up to vote in the appointed hour–we have weeks of early voting, no significant rules for absentee ballots, mail ballots with extremely loose return requirements, same day voting registration without reasonable ID, and more.
And then we wonder why people who have not had to show up on time in the right place, and to otherwise follow the rules, have trouble coping with places in adult life where they need to show up on time in the right place and follow the rules, and we wonder why their “adjustment disorder” gives way to major depressive disorder and other serious mental illnesses, and the consequences of the same. Our political systems are infantilizing our most vulnerable people.
@bosshoss429: Sorry to hear about your relationship with your daughter. A few years, ago, I had a nephew that transitioned. He was to my political right on many issues. Then, after transitioning, she adopted a victim mentality. My devout Catholic mother would not discuss politics with her, but showed her that, while some of my niece’s new “friends” might have had sh**ty family lives, she wasn’t one of them. It’s now been several years since she shed the victim mentality. Not only is she happier, but she’s back to my political right.
Eventually, the social classes that the Left targets with this victim mentality will self-discover that they’ve subsisted on a diet of hate and fear. But every so often, someone who’s been led to believe they’re a victim will do the research. Check out what the other side is saying. The last election demonstrated more people are “doing the research” and deciding, for all of Trump’s flaws, Harris was an empty (power) suit.
It tracks with this mentality of shaving your head, wearing the blue bracelet, and cutting off contact with family members. For all the talk of the cult of personality around Trump (and there is), how is what they’re doing not also cult behavior?
Cults always seek to isolate followers from outside influences that could disrupt their hold on those followers. Because the second someone in the cult sees a friend or family member and not an “other”, the cult’s power is diminished. Because if you’re willing to treat them as a human being, you might find something called “common ground.” That common ground is where the self-research usually starts.
