“Unintended” Consequences
By Mitch Berg
Among the many laws that went into effect on Monday, Governor Klink was proud to announce this:
For starters: 68? Sweet Jesus, what is this, “Cool Hand Luke” sweat fetish pr0n?
Beyond that?
Mandatory temperatures (outside the obvious safety habitability rules, which already exist) combined with rent control = less housing.
Or does nobody study economics anymore?

Or does nobody study economics anymore?
I suppose that you already knew that to ask this is to answer it.

Two thoughts:
1) The nanny state is oddly compelled to insert itself into every aspect of human life.
2) There is a scum that floats on the current of capitalism which compels the intervention of nannies.
And yeah, it would be nice if “you don’t like it, move” was actually a workable plan – because actual free markets are a rare commodity.
I mean, while it may be in the interest of developers build, build, build, it is not in the interest of existing landlords – and nannies still have to raise funds to be elected.
So there you go, instead of a vital free market, we get stupid feel good regulations.

Typical liberal thinking, adopt a statue and everything will be golden. Never works.
A buddy works for a company which has decided to save the planet. They are maintaining 71° in their offices. Really? Measured where? At the central pillar where the thermostat is mounted right under the heat vent. But the office next to the window on the North side, where the wind blows all day long, is 59°. Same question for landlords.
If the tenant decides to open the door from the living room to the 3-season porch so the children can play on the porch with their new toys during Christmas break, does that porch also have to be heated to 68°?
If heat is included in the rent and the tenant leaves the windows open rather than turn the thermostat down (because radiator heat takes too long to adjust) or refuses to close the storm windows because it interferes with the cross ventilation, is the landlord to blame when the apartment is cold?
Tenants get free lawyers from the Tenants Union but who pays for the landlord’s lawyer?

Greg, that nanny state you speak of (oddly compelled to insert itself into every aspect of human life) is central to Mussolini’s definition of fascism; ie, everything in the State, nothing against the State, nothing outside the State.

Is there an option by the renters to drop below 68°? Or does the Governor just know best?
When my wife was having hot flashes she would have ripped the thermostat out of the wall had it been set to 68°.

Interesting point is that there’s increasing research that suggests that health improves when one sleeps at temperatures below 68F. So the governor is once again trying to kill poor people.

reader15,
My wife would do the same thing.

Once again Governor Klink affirms my decision to move from Minnesota. I have a brother in law who works for a property management company. I haven’t asked him what they’re doing because he just celebrated three years of sobriety. Not a coincidence that his addiction exploded in 2020 when his job at a well known Highland Park watering hole went poof.
