Chinese national in the US on a student visa, busted for leading a ring (one might say “racket” of iPhone thieves that stole over 1,000 smart phones (sometimes violently) worth over $800K, gets arrested…

The central figure behind what prosecutors called a roving network of robbers admitted to leading the scheme to steal cellphones in downtown Minneapolis and Dinkytown, drain their financial apps of money totaling more than $275,000 and then ship the phones overseas for sale.

Zhongshuang Su, aka Brandon Su, 33, of Minneapolis agreed to plead guilty to four amended felony counts of stolen property in connection with the operation that lasted roughly a year until charges against Su and his band of thieves were filed last September.

Su is accused of being the man known to others in the scheme as the “iPhone Man,” who bought the stolen phones and sent them to foreign buyers. In total, prosecutors believe Su shipped more than 1,100 phones to addresses in Hong Kong. Prosecutors put the value of those phones at more than $800,000.

…and gets a sentence that couldn’t even be failrly described as a slap on the wrist:

The plea agreement between the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office and the defense calls for a 13-month sentence that would be set aside for three years and dismissal of the felony racketeering charges as long as he stays out of legal trouble. The prosecution also reserves the right to ask for Su to serve up to a year in the workhouse.

Someone trying to defend themselves against one of the thieves could easily have gotten a tougher sentence.

    enterprising engineers need to look at developing a close quarters CO2 cartridge(doesn’t activate shot spotter) based hand held device to be printed with a 3D printer that propels a bundle of 5 carbon fiber fleschettes, accurate & potentially deadly(if you aim at low center mass) within 15 feet for urban self defense.

    Questions:

    Why is a 33 year old man still here on a student visa? What’s he studying at Metro State – or did he overstay his visa and is actually an illegal alien the feds never bothered to track down and deport?

    How is it legal for a foreign national on a student visa to co-own a Hot Pot restaurant? I thought students were not allowed to work.

    If some of the victims were violently assaulted to obtain their phones for this guy, why isn’t he an accessory to the violent crime? Why is his sentence set at non-violent offender levels?

    The value of the stolen phones is $800,000 and the value of the funds stolen from victims accounts is $275,000 so this is literally a $1,000,000 crime. What’s the sentencing guideline for a million-dollar robbery? 13 months suspended? Really? How much does someone have to steal to get sent to jail?

    The investigation took FOUR YEARS to get this guy? And then let him go with a warning?

    A dozen people were also arrested and charged, some of them getting years in prison, while this guy got off with no jail at all. That’s like throwing the book at one of Al Capone’s gang members but letting Al Capone himself amble off to the country club. What makes the ringleader so special? Is it because he’s Chinese and they bought and paid for Lesko Brandon so somehow Minneapolis owes the Chinks a big favor?

    That book may be for you and your family, or maybe it isn’t, but that doesn’t mean you get to decide whether it is appropriate for other people in your community. Whether you read those books is up to you. Whether the rest of us read those books is not.

    You might visit a library and spend some time looking at a catalogue of book titles and subjects. The Chaska public library has Mein Kampf available for readers. There are any number of books that include racism, sexism and heterosexuality. You might even check out a book that supports the values that you hold.

    I don’t get this. Stealing a million bucks worth of stuff while assaulting multiple people, and….suspended sentence? All the guys in jail for stealing just one cell phone are asking “how do I get this deal instead?”

    I would suspect that having posted on Sitd, none of us would qualify, our would be more like the Jan. 6th crowd. You know, taxpayers.

    Books, newspapers, magazines.

    I haven’t run across any of them yet which isn’t the choice of the person picking it up to read it, and the choice of those who aren’t interested or afraid of it, to leave it alone.

    Control of others, one of the mainstays of those who are insecure and threatened.

    So much of this frothing is based on the mistaken idea that if a kid sees something like another kid with two same sex parents, or a friend who is homosexual that the kid will run out and become one from mere association. A complete lack of knowledge (which could be gained through reading) accounts for this hysteria.

    To paraphrase mr d — If you don’t like the book, don’t check it out. The same goes for your kids; and educate them.

    But not blogs or social media. The internet is completely different from books, newspapers or magazines. Those should be censored by in-house Propriety Monitors, guided by the federal government’s Disinformation, Malinformation and Misinformation staff.
