A Mostly Peaceful Year In Saint Paul

While people focus on Minneapolis’s ongoing decay, Saint Paul just broke its homicide record:

And there’s plenty of time to run up the score before New Years.

Remember – in 2016, there were 81 homicides in the entire state – 30 in Minneapolis, and (IIRC) 18 in Saint Paul.

Hard to believe Saint Paul is the sane city…

  1. World ends, women hardest hit.

The StarTribune story notes that 10 of 39 victims were women. Seven homicides were related to domestic disputes.

The word “gang” isn’t in the story. A St. Paul police sergeant came up with a nice euphemism:

“[St Paul police sergeant] Ernster said there are no specific trends in terms of motives for the killings, which he said are a mix of domestic violence cases, drug transactions gone bad and ‘a mix of people that just chose violence to solve their differences.'”

No statistic was apparently available for “differences.”

  2. Reader15, the technical term is “chimpout”.

Whatever the trigger, the proximate cause is a complete lack of impulse control, which is in turn the consequence of a low IQ.

  3. Saw this ad while reading the latest data dump on TwitR:

Popeyes Is Bringing Back BOGO Chicken Sandwiches for the Rest of the Year
From Dec. 19 through Jan. 1, customers can buy one chicken sandwich combo and get another sandwich free

    Talk about begging for trouble…🤣

  4. Murder is an “apex crime,” meaning it always gets public attention, whether the people involved want attention or not.
We know that a lot of lesser crimes are not reported because people don’t want to talk to the cops.
So, my genius idea is that you can measure increases in crime at all levels by determining the increase/decrease in murders over time, i.e., if murders/year in Saint Paul have doubled since 2018, you should be able to determine the real increase in rapes, robberies, assaults, etc., regardless of their reported rate. All you need is the multiplier. which is going to some log (delta of murder rate). and is likely to be fairly constant across non-homicide crimes.
Consider this my contribution to the field of criminology!

  5. And if some folks assault fast food staff because the restaurant runs out of corn or dipping sauce, what will they do if Popeye’s runs out of chicken sandwiches?

I like Popeye’s for its spicy seasoning, and have lamented that there aren’t many in the Twin Cities, and none close to me. Now, I’m feeling pretty good about the distance.

  6. Chairs will fly NW.

Patronizing any fried chicken joint is tantamount to attending a rap concert….it’s only a matter of time before a respect gets dissed.

The best defense against serious injury during a chimpout at Popeyes is to keep a pocket full of dat sawse, and toss it out to clear a path to the door.

Of course, if they run out of chicken, bullets will fly, 10/10.

  7. UMMP, in 2009, my friends and I watched 2 aspiring rappers shoot it out, at blank point range, in the middle of the street at the corner of 27th and Emerson N. When they ran out of bullets, they both jumped into their respective whoopties and headed out. Neither made it more than a block before slumping over dead (saving the taxpayers many thousands of $).

We watched the news for a report, and none ever came.

I firmly believe the only reason the TC media reports any of this crap now is because if they don’t “Crime watch” will.

  8. havent we seen this movie before
woman drives from lakeville to minneapolis to use popeyes coupon but they’re out
you already know the racial component
    drama ensues

how bad does your business model have to suck before you reach the “bring in mo thuz” stage?

  9. The CIA considers me to be a trustee, aka a “self-managed” asset.

  10. How many of the perps were recidivist criminals that should have been locked up?

So glad I left Highland Park and Ramsey County in 2019.
