Labored Day

On Monday, third district Congressman Dean Phillips claimed complete ownership of Labor Day:

Seems a little presumptuous – foreclosing all communication that is ambivalent to opposed re unions – unless Phillips is a real champion of labor.

But a quick search doesn’t indicate that the Phillips distillery in Princeton Minnesota is unionized; a look through a court document related to a workmen’s compensation case mentions no union involvement on behalf of an injured warehouse worker, so I don’t think it’s a reasonable stretch to assume the plant is not, or not fully, unionized.

I will be putting in a call to representative Phillips‘s office on this today.

  1. Funny you should mention the Phillips trust fund source, Mitch. Friends that live in Princeton have told me that the management there, are pretty abusive. Apparently, the workers put up with it, because a lot of them live close to the facility and there aren’t very many options without a much longer commute.

  2. I did not know about the Phillips distillery connection. Interesting. You’d think a capable political consultant could build a political campaign to oppose Dean P with this kind of info. Like, the trust fund is a drug dealer causing death and destruction among MN families? And/or the facility is non-union with abusive management.

  3. New TIPP Poll Asks: Does America Have A Two-Tier Justice System?

    libturd hypocrisy knows no bounds

  4. Five will get you ten his family company’s management has gotten training in how to maintain a union free workplace. It’s very common among “heritage” companies that are more or less using their ancient capital until it’s no longer possible to use anymore. Some of the tactics used for this tend to be less savory as well–I’m no big friend of unions, but I’ve seen some of what they do, and my response was to be very tempted to start a unionization drive.

  5. for labor union freaks its always 1934 in minneapolis for blacks its always 1963 in alabama for gays its always 1969 in stonewall hustlers cannot admit society has improved cuz nobody would pay them to shame us

you cant shame a leftist hypocrisy doesnt mean anything to them they have no morals to be ashamed of their only shame is failing to control everyone else so they can make the world a better place do you think stalin was ashamed or pol pot hell no

  6. Phillips is a representative who is actually interested in representing everyone, not just those who share his ideology. Most of us have more in common than we do differences. We just don’t realize it if we’re in our own echo chambers. It’s all too easy to divide these days.

  7. Phillips is a representative who is actually interested in representing everyone, not just those who share his ideology.

That’s his shtick, but as a practical matter all that means is he occasionally voices very mild disapproval with Ilhan Omar, but he gets in line every time.

  8. Phillips is a representative who is actually interested in representing everyone, not just those who share his ideology

He’s a little like former commenter “Flash”. Some strategically placed “moderate” talk on subjects where it won’t anger Pelosi – but votes with leadership every time.

  9. If by chance you’re feeling a little stressed today, take a brief moment to reflect in silent gratitude that the FBI is not investigating you for stealing and storing at your home a cache of top secret documents about another nation’s nuclear capabilities.

Translation: they’re not buying my opening foray, so it’s time to threadjack.

  10. Now, we don’t know that his distillery has actively kept unions out. But, on the other issues, I don’t see Democrats doing much that will help affordability in healthcare or childcare.

On the unionization issue-I’m with bikebubba. Not pro-union, but those companies with the very liberal CEOs might deserve a union.

  11. @ mr d — Try something positive, but that would be a challenge, I’m guessing.

Phillips’ Caucus and his Braver Angels work is truly great. Would be outstanding if a lot more in Congress participated. (Note: An equal number of Democrats and Republicans participate in these, by definition.)

Phillips’ district is as purple as it gets. Great mix of Democrats and Republicans. And Phillips does a great job of constituent outreach. Good effort by Phillips…

  12. @ mr d — Try something positive, but that would be a challenge, I’m guessing.

Oh, I am 100% positive you were threadjacking. I do give you points for sheer effrontery, though.

  13. ^^ This is why Republicans nationwide are busy scrubbing their websites of their true positions on abortion. Fortunately, the internet remembers. People took these liberties for granted for too long. Not anymore.

Wait, your threadjacking causes Republicans to scrub their websites? You’re one powerful mofo troll.

  14. jfc…rAT Emery is literally babbling now.

How much gin/vodka/Old Pumphouse have you swilled this morning, rAT? lmao!

Are you seeing fabulous LAkeFRoNt EStaTEs floating before your eyes?

    tia!

  15. some deep stater leaks a lie to the trump hating media and its game over theyve got him now trump is going to jail except on saturday the strib said the folders marked classified were empty no such documents exist talk about confirmation bias

  16. Translation: they’re not buying my opening foray, so it’s time to threadjack.
This is the signature Emery tactic when he writes something so dumb he wants you to forget that he wrote it.
The last step is for Emery to write something so banal and commonplace it’s not really a comment at all, such as “it all depends on voter turnout,” or “only time will tell if America can heal its political divide.”

  17. Emery tells us that Phillips is all about all of his constituents, which is why he just alienated every constituent who might believe that compulsory unionization is a bad idea, and right to work is a good one.

    Um, wait a minute….I think I just made Mr. D’s point, didn’t I?

  18. Say there Tom — I remember your dad’s favorite bar command: ‘just a quick 1/2 dozen and then I’ll go home to the family’ ….

  19. Phillips is a representative who is actually interested in representing everyone, not just those who share his ideology.

well to put the lie(as usual) to Emery’s statement just read Mr Phillips twitter post above – Mr Phillips makes it very clear with his exclusionary language that there are great segments of his constituents he actively chooses NOT to represent!

  20. Does anyone else think Dean Phillips has an uncanny resemblance to Bill Maher…

Emery does his Jeffery Toobin impersonation.

  21. Q: Why did Jeffrey Toobin play with himself during a zoom meeting?
A: He thought it was a video date!

    Sorry, best I can do.

  22. Just what America’s workers need, a frat boy millionaire telling them what their values properly are and are not.

  23. Woolly wrote: “I’m hearing that things are going to get really awful in Western Europe this winter.
power costs (mostly heating) is going to reach over $4,000/year beginning next month. Average household income in GB is $36,000/year.”

Once Russia switches off gas exports to Europe its leverage is over. It literally can’t do anything more to hurt the West short of starting shooting (which given how woefully its military has performed against a much smaller country is clearly not something it is going to do). In contrast, there are still plenty of sanctions the West could still impose. Kicking all remaining Russian banks off of swift will be a start, and whilst gas gets all the headlines, the Kremlin makes much more money from oil exports than gas exports, so putting more pressure on that (e.g. denying insurance, price cap etc.) will continue to damage them.

  24. “Once Russia switches off gas exports to Europe its leverage is over.”
Talk about “whistling past the graveyard . . .”
Kind of like “once the enemy kills all of us, we will have no need to fear him!”
The purpose of the cut off is to make make Western Europeans rethink their military support of Ukraine. ‘Support Ukraine with weapons, and I will create political unrest on your soil’ says Vlad. Will the gambit work? I don’t know, and Emery does not know either.
