“ DeSantis in fighter plane conjures images of Dukakis in tank

Just between you and me, I suspect that the only people for whom it “conjures” that image is Charlie Crist’s message team.

DeSantis was actually in the military; putting Dukakis in a tank was a little like putting Paul Lynde in a UFC ring. (UPDATE: Duke served in the Army, as a radio operator serving the UN Armistice Commission, back in the fifties. My bad. Albeit not as big a bad as the ).

Dukakis did 2 years in the army in South Korea (after the armistice)..

  2. Mr. D Says:

    The problems for Dukakis were:

    1) his helmet was way too big and it made him look like a child; and
    2) the shit-eating grin on his face made him look even more ridiculous.

Honestly I’m so distant from military culture I didn’t know they had military lawyers do their paperwork in fighter jets.

👆🏻 Established a new low for the ASVAB test. Turned down for enlistment because “potato peeler” billet disappeared after WWII

  5. Emery Says:

The navy wonders how a lawyer got the keys to a fighter jet.

Or a tank, no, Emery? That’s Dukakis’ profession. But hey, we’ll just ignore DeSantis’ Bronze Star and such, right?

My thought is that the tank picture backfired because Dukakis’ platform and public persona were of a peacenik, so the picture ticked off his supporters while being a cause for derision among the middle of the electorate. It also didn’t help that he’d paroled a number of very serious criminals, some of whom went on to commit heinous crimes. So the overall impression was as if Richard Simmons had gone for a joyride in an M1.

The girl writer for the WaPo probably wasn’t even alive in 1988. Or else she was barely out of diapers. Speaking as a former Dukakis voter I can state unequivocally that the problem with the Dukakis in the tank photo was his baldly anti-military stance in the campaign. That’s why progressive Dems loved him. Reagan with Star Wars and his tough anti-Soviet stance was the bad guy. It was a massive disconnect for Dukakis to pretend even for a second that he wasn’t all about disarming the USA. Imagine Obama trying to pull it off. Remember what happened to John Kerry when he tried to parlay his Vietnam experience into “John Kerry, reporting for duty.” It just didn’t wash, even before the Swift boat veterans called him out. Kerry was the guy who returned his medals, called American GIs the equivalent of Genghis Khan, even though he was testifying based on complete hearsay. So I don’t think DeSantis in a fighter plane will go viral because it’s consistent with his position and beliefs.

Well, Emery, since DeSantis served in the Navy, I’m betting that he still has connections within the ranks.

As for Pedo Pete? He can’t even handle a bicycle. But that “naval academy appointment” might have changed that.

  9. bikebubba Says:

Biden’s Naval Academy claim is a great picture of why people don’t trust the media. Biden grew up with asthma and received a 1-Y deferment during Vietnam, already had a bachelor’s degree, and was at the upper end of the allowable age range. (I tried to get in as well, was stopped by asthma) So on several fronts, Biden should have been pilloried by the media for statements he should have known to be false. He was involved in making Academy appointments for decades, after all.

Man, Blaze, that was big problem in WW2. Some people would join the army just to get the KP training and to get their hands on a potato peeler.
Then they would desert. Because, man, that potato peeler meant you had a career, right there in your pocket.
