India First
By Mitch Berg
Joe Doakes from Como Park emails:
India not shipping much wheat to other nations, they’re keeping most of it to feed their own. They are hoarding wheat!
The tiny amount they grudgingly sell costs too much. They are price gouging!
Poor people in other nations will go hungry. They are playing politics with food, women and children hardest hit!
India is putting the interest of its own citizens first and letting the rest of the world fend for itself. They are ultra-nationalist isolationists!
Why aren’t we?

Rhetorical question, right?

Is it legal to use a strawman to make a point even if you’re not a troll? From that same article, [e]ven though it is the world’s second-largest producer of wheat, India consumes most of the wheat it produces. Moreover, it’s apparently a bad crop year in India for wheat.

“Why aren’t we?”
When I was growing up in the 80s, there was some sentiment that we should help our own impoverished citizens before taking care of the world. But, for the most part, the broader message was that the US is such a rich country, we are world leaders, we can take care of the world.
Taking care of the world is supposed to lead to less war, less global poverty, more global innovation that positively serves the world.
As that was drilled into my childhood mind, I still want to believe those optimistic ideas, even though my eyes tell me a different story these days.

45 degree (Celsius) heatwave continues in India withering standing crops. Frankly India needs to feed its own first.
