So far as I can tell, Siddique Mateen is a legal citizen, and a lot of what has been written about him on the right is factually incorrect (notably Breitbart).
Fact checking shows he NEVER praised or otherwise spoke or wrote positively about the Taliban as has been claimed; quite the opposite, he was adamantly anti-Taliban and opposed to the segment of the Pakistani security and intelligence agency that was anti-American (the crowd that helped hide bin Laden). He had a particular gripe about a long disputed border between Pakistan and Afghanistan dating back to the partition with India.
Claims that he was associated with a radical mosque appears to be false as well. He was and is correctly described as a moderate muslim who attended a moderate mosque.
Quotes about his views on homosexuality indicate that while he was opposed to the LGBT, he felt it was up to God to respond to their orientation and life style, not for him or other mere mortals to act against.
Looks like the shooter was a violent and belligerent little asshole all the way back in his childhood, and that daddy dearest was in a bit of denial on the one hand, but would hit him on the other, as discipline, including slapping him in front of teachers at school. Presumably conservatives applaud that kind of ‘discipline’ rather than condemning the father of the shooter?
