The Light Flicks On. And Is Smothered In Ennui.
By Mitch Berg
I gotta confess; I had never watched a full episode of The Colbert Report, until last night.
And that’ll be the last.
Good Lord, what a waste of time.
Note to everyone involved; you don’t need to parody conservative talking heads. That’s what Glenn Beck is for.

I watched this for the first time when I was down in FL. He did a long bit about Ayn Rand and Atlas Shrugged. He came to the conclusion the book was about “moochers”, and the strikers were all assholes. The man is as deep as a Dixie cup.
Oh, and he also concluded that John Gault’s “island” wouldn’t be a very fun place.

“Oh, and he also concluded that John Gault’s “island” wouldn’t be a very fun place.”
He’s probably right about that. John Galt was an insufferable asshole.

He’s never read the book. It was a valley, not an island.

But you’re not the target demographic, Mitch. You probably don’t like Barney, either.
Both Colbert and Stewart do very well at entertaining their target audiences, and their numbers show it; they’re younger than you, scareder than you, and far to the left of you. Doing political humor that’s actually funny to a broad spectrum of folks is much more difficult, and is moreso, for the true believers.
The late Richard Jeni nailed it, repeatedly — but he was an equal opportunity offender, and had the endearing quality of making fun of himself, pretty consistently. On a good day, Stewart can and does manage that, but Colbert never does; he’s making fun of his clumsy conservative persona.
