Commencement Late And A Dollar Short
By Mitch Berg
The fact that someone has beaten me to giving the graduation speech I’ve always wanted to give – especially at a Minnesota school – is tempered by the fact that I will never be asked to give one.

Excellent article! I was surprised to find that type of thinking allowed to be expressed in a Nanny Bloomberg controlled publication.

Very well-written. The perfect follow-up to last year’s “You’re not that important” speech; I forget it’s actual title. I seem to recall such feelings of self importance back in the late 70’s, too.
Do you think that such high self-esteem will continue once everyone, regardless of academic ability or ambition (as President Obama wants proposes), can go to college?

Although it’s sentiments are correct, it is directed to the wrong audience. The proper audience is a schools Faculty Senate, Professors Union or whatever they call a collection of College/University Instructors.
Think Professor “Bill” would be willing to tolerate an alternative point of view expressed on the campus of the ‘U’? He ran a baby toting Jack Tomczak out just for showing up on campus. In addition to a few students, many instructors at the ‘U’ did their best George Wallace impression when Condi Rice showed up to speak. And remember, the pushback against Tom Emmer being an instructor at Hamline came from the faculty.
