Beatrice (Greslie) Berg

By Mitch Berg

If my grandmother were alive, she’d be 102 today.

I grew up four blocks from Grandma Bea, in Jamestown, until she died in October of my senior year of high school.

In this piece, on what would have been her 100th birthday, I wrote about her claim to fame.  It’s still a fun story.

Mitch, thanks for providing the local color for an American icon. I’m happy that your grandmother meant so much to you that the occasion of her birthday still sticks in your mind.

Thanks for the Grandma Bea remembrance, Mitch. Did you see this at MDE?

“According to my source, one of the first things that Mark Ritchie did when he moved into the office was to remove the State Photograph, “Grace” from his own office (that’s the photo taken by Eric Enstrom of a guy praying over a loaf of bread and a Bible). Ritchie replaced it with a print that mimics an American flag, but the union of the flag, instead of blue with 50 stars, is a photo of former Senator Paul Wellstone, and the stripes are alternatively made of a Wellstone quotation on white stripes and dark stripes made of small black and white photos.”

The good news is that there is a statute requiring this state photograph be displayed in the SOS office. Heh.
