I’m Not Entirely Sure Why…

Her husband in the video is Lord Percy from “Blackadder”! I can’t look at his face without thinking “dimwitted twit”. That really, really made it hard for me to take this sad song seriously. I’m still waiting for Rowan Atkinson to walk out in a wig of Kate Bush hair and give Percy a big hug.

I wonder how many people have had their serious acting careers destroyed by playing huge comedic roles like that? (I didn’t make the association, since I haven’t seen Black Adder in years).
My acting professor in college knew Fred Gwynne before The Munsters; he was actually a great Shakespearean actor. Once he donned that prosthetic forehead, it was all over; his “comeback” was just beginning (My Cousin Vinnie) when he died.
The next one I worry about – John McGinley. He played so many great roles – I loved him in Platoon – but after Dr. Cox on Scrubs, I bet he spends fifteen years playing ever-descending over-the-top tartly sarcastic people.

Hugh Laurie, another “Blackadder” alum, is doing nicely in the TV drama “House.” I’m as surprised as anyone considering his peerless depiction of the dimwitted Prince Regent in “Blackadder III.” I wonder if the reverse will happen and he finds difficulty doing comedy in the future. As for Fred Gwynne, any actor who created as masterful a comedic cariacature as Fred Munster should rightfully have gone to his grave a proud man.
