Ghastly

The descriptions of the accident over the weekend that killed five MInneapolis women were bad enough.

Seeing it is another matter entirely:

I know it’s a trick of the light and angle and video – but it looks like the victims car is completely erased. It takes a lot to upset me. This did it.

Not sure how any jury seeing this video doesn’t go into the room with a serious bias against the driver…

…assuming it ever goes to trial. How sick is it that we have to preface all accounts of tragedies and atrocities in Minneapolis with a reference to “Moriarty Justice”.

And we do – because the driver, Derrick Thompson, has apparently already skated from one heinous traffic crime – a fact we learn on the 22nd and final paragraph:

Thompson has a long history of driving-related offenses, including multiple convictions for driving with a revoked or suspended license, according to state court and Department of Public Safety records. His license was reinstated in March 2023 and remained active at the time of the crash.

Which was five paragraphs below the fact that he is the son of former DFL representative John Thompson:

Though police have not publicly named the driver, two sources identified him as 27-year-old Derrick John Thompson, of Brooklyn Park. Public records indicate that he is the son of former state Rep. John Thompson, DFL-St. Paul. John Thompson did not respond to messages seeking comment.

Just as the sins of the father aren’t visited on the sons, a son’s crime isn’t a father’s fault. The fact that Thompson the Younger apparently benefitted from revolving door justice.

But the dead are Somali, in Hennepin County. I doubt even Moriarty can ignore that.

  1. Here’s my cynical prediction: the DFL front line (Walz, Ellison, Frey, Omar etc) will attend the funeral and the usual media apologists will spew reams of copy about how young black men fear being arrested and murdered, so it was all a big misunderstanding, no one’s fault except the institutional racism the DOJ was talking about in its report. Prove me wrong.

  2. I read the victims were 5 somali women on their way to a friend’s wedding. I would offer thoughts and prayers except I know how much liberals hate it when conservatives pray for the victims of liberal policies.

The dead were black. the accused is presumed to be the descendant of African slaves. does that make this black on black crime? Is a white man allowed to have an opinion?

Said to say, I suspect the golf doc is right on.

  3. The “mammuthus theorem” in action again.
In February of 2020, Thompson was given an 8 year sentence in California for leading police on a chase that resulted in a crash that crippled a pedestrian. Thompson then fled the scene of the crash.
Why didn’t Thompson pull over when the police tried to stop him? Because he was in possession of 17 pounds of marijuana and $20,000 cash.
Three years later he is out and he is given his driver’s license back.
    Unbelievable.

  4. I wonder where they got the video?

It looks as if the camera was set up in advance, camera already running and following the victim’s car when the crash occurred. The cameraman pivoted to follow the crash vehicle throwing sparks. Good camera work.

I wonder who took it? 🤔

  5. The tail lights of the crash vehicle look like a Cadillac Escalade.

    I can’t afford a Cadillac Escalade.

Where does a 27 year old convicted felon get a Cadillac Escalade?

  6. The crash occurred Friday night. It’s Monday morning now. Where’s Ilhan?

Occurred in her district. Victims are Somali’s. Black driver justifiedly fleeing for his life from White cop. She should be all over this.

What could be keeping her from speaking out? Or who?

  7. “a son’s crime isn’t a father’s fault.”

perhaps not legally, but Mr Thompson the Younger learned somewhere how to be callously indifferent to others. Given his fathers barbaric public record I believe some blame should be levied, particularly if he cosigned or purchased the Escalade for his son.

  8. I feel bad for the real victim, the groom. You know this is gonna come up in every marital spat forever.

“If your mother hadn’t insisted on us getting married that weekend, my friends would still be alive!”

  9. Bigman;
MP actually answered your question. He got caught in CA in 2018. Since he’s proven that his first “accident” didn’t teach him a lesson about driving fast, it’s unlikely that he stopped selling drugs either.

  10. Where does a 27 year old convicted felon get a Cadillac Escalade? – Bigman

Why didn’t Thompson pull over when the police tried to stop him? Because he was in possession of 17 pounds of marijuana and $20,000 cash.- MP

  11. The sins of the father should not reflect on the son, nor should the sins of the son (necessarily) reflect on the father.

Yet, when the cornerstone of the father’s career is enabling the very sort of crazy criminality as on display in the son’s behavior, the connection is obvious.

  12. I suppose it’s inappropriate to joke when five innocent young women have been killed, not very compassionate. But it’s either laugh or cry.

Pilots talk about the error chain, a series of events that culminate in a crash, rather than a single factor. This crash was also the result of an error chain, every link of which is grounded in Liberal policy, from lax sentencing to early release to soft on drugs to refusing to hold Black criminals accountable for their behavior by blaming White systemic racism.

Liberals weep for criminals accidentally killed while resisting arrest. I weep for victims callously killed by criminals fleeing arrest. Who is more compassionate?

  13. On a side note, as I have mentioned a couple of times previously, I am a route sales geek and my territory covers a large section of the metro and a chunk of western Wisconsin, so I’m on the road most of the week. The number of people that are driving like it’s their last day on earth, seems to get worse every week. Women and pickup truck drivers, lead the way by the biggest margin, but black drivers, about 50/50 male to female, are going the fastest when the are speeding. Tailgating and weaving in and out of traffic lanes, add to it. They seem to flaunt the law with impunity. On another note, I had a conversation with two black female Bloomington officers on Saturday morning. They know my cousin who recently retired from the force. They said that the police chief, who, if you were unaware, is also black. They told me that his rules are “No one, that breaks the law in Bloomington, gets a pass.” So far, according to these officers, he has stuck to it and they seem to appreciate it.

  14. What do you do if some people clearly belong in jail and those people are disproportionately black?
Supposedly wokism (aka racial equity) began in the 90s when social justice scholars saw that a generation after the end of institutional racism in the US, blacks were still disproportionately affected by, well, virtually everything bad. Drug abuse, criminality, fatherless homes, unemployment, poverty, and on and on and on.
It is insanity. Anything other than perfect equity between groups of people is now accepted as proof of “systemic racism” and the vast might of the wealthiest, most powerful government in the history of the earth is used to combat this thing that is only described by its ill effects.

  15. A couple of observations.

Thompson was already observed driving 90+ mph on 35W BEFORE he was chased (if he was chased; appears they were tracking him via camera).

I read that the Escalade was a rental. Was Thompson able to rent a car w/o a valid drivers license? If not, who rented it for him?

The reporter, Liz Collins, is married to former MPD Union Chief Bob Kroll, and she and her husband’s effigies were smashed during John Thompson’s infamous “burn Hugo to the ground” protest.

The DFL is going to try and deflect and paper over this crash, SOP. The “paper” they use might very well be flash paper, though.

  16. I always check SiTD before the Strib in the mornings. Just went over their site, curious as to what the headlines would be regarding the crash (thinking how the son of a Republican politico would fare; Morgan Gramms was unavailable for comment.)

There was one understated headline on the story, and it properly putting the focus on the deaths of the young women and their upcoming funeral today. As to the circumstance of the crash? There was only this line toward the end of the article:
A speeding driver on Interstate 35W ran a red light after exiting at Lake Street in south Minneapolis, crashing into the car carrying the five women, according to Minneapolis police. The car had just passed a state trooper who couldn’t keep up with the speeding vehicle.

  17. Bigman, the camera that recorded the crash was not moving. It probably was a fixed surveillance camera. It looks like that camera was panned, but really what it was was someone recording with (likely) a cell phone and moving the focus of the phone camera across a wide computer monitor. Look at the very last frame and you’ll see the edge of a computer monitor.

  18. Thanks, reader15, I see it now. I thought the vertical line was a signpost or something. Clearly not. Good call.

Night Writer – Strib says Thompson’s driver’s license was reinstated in March so it was valid at the time of the crash. Another link in the error chain of events leading up to this crash. Not that canceling his license would have stopped him from driving any more than a revoked license stops drunks from driving, but it’s telling that Minnesota bureaucrats believe a guy with his record is still considered a safe and proper person to enjoy the privilege of driving on the same street as me.

It’s a sad, terrible, tragic event but I’m glad to note law enforcement has leapt into action to conduct an investigation . . . of who leaked the Metro Transit video.

    https://www.startribune.com/mpd-investigating-unauthorized-release-of-metro-transit-video-showing-crash-that-killed-5-in-one-car/600283733/

If this had been an officer-involved shooting, every Liberal would be demanding the instant release of dashcam video because the public has a right to know. But since it’s a DFL legislator’s kid, nobody should release any video, it’s disrespectful to the families of the victims. Heads I win, tails, you lose. Typical.

  19. According to MDPS, the trooper was not in hot pursuit, of the speeding vehicle before the trooper could stop the driver.

  20. I notice that some of the DFL/Media are referring to Liz Collin as “a former journalist” since she no longer works for them. The most important next step will be to fully Cancel her before sending attack dog Moriarity after her and her source. Clearly this video was never meant for the public to see.

  21. fucking akismet

I notice that some of the DFL/Media are referring to Liz Collin as “a former journalist” since she no longer works for them. The most important next step will be to fully Cancel her before sending attack cur Moriarity after her and her source. Clearly this video was never meant for the public to see.

  22. Mac
Well, perhaps the video was taken by a passerby. Just like any scoop that the left wing propaganda spewers wouldn’t be able to hold themselves back from releasing if it involved a Republican, Liz Collin is free to obtain material for her scoops.

  23. Three days since five Somali women were killed in her district and still, Ilhan Omar has no comment. Were they from the wrong clan? Didn’t have the right connections? Beneath her notice?

Strib says Thompson rented the Escalade from Hertz at the airport 25 minutes before the crash. Those things rent for like $300 a day. What’s a 27-year-old felon do for a living that he can afford that? And why rent it at all – what cargo does a guy have to carry that he needs an Escalade, on a weekend, at those prices?

  24. Those are really good questions, Big guy, and if the assailant was’t related to a black DemoCommie, they might even be answered. Or the answers made public.

  25. They’re burying the Sammi girls today…100’s of Sammie’s have gathered at the cemetery.

Now MNCrimewatch says 10 people are “down”, EMS end route.

    Lol

  26. Somebody smarter than me, help me out here. How does insurance work for rental cars? If I rent an Escalade from Hertz and use it to kill five people, does Hertz pay for that, or does it against my personal car insurance?

I wonder if he bought the optional collision damage waiver coverage? That’s not just a scratch, not gonna be able to buff it out this time.

Also, remember the hoopla about five years ago, SUVs are “unfair” to smaller vehicles? If a 6,000 pound Escalade broadsides a 3,000 Honda Civic at, let’s say, 60 miles per hour, the people in the Civic will be killed instantly while the driver of the Escalade will walk to Taco Bell to hide from the cops (and then spend three days in the hospital, hiding from the media). Sad to say, this incident shows the critics were correct. I stand corrected.

  27. When is the last time the media complained about a leak?

But Hey, we need to deflect from the DFL legislators kid who massacred half a dozen Somali women. We need someone White to blame. I know, metro transit security camera operator!!! Crucify that guy
