Sacked

I try – pinky swear – to see people as people, and not to be constantly petty and venal. We as people aren’d defined by our externalities – our jobs, politics, whatever – any more than we are by our social, ethnic or class identity.

Even less, in the great scheme of things, are they defined by the ways in which I, Mitch Berg, disagree with them.

With that out of the way?

Steve Sack is retiring from the Star Tribune.

I’m not going to say Sack is the worst editorial cartoonist in the business. It’s entirely possible there’s someone more facile, less informed, more generally blinkered by their agenda.

But among the ones I’m familiar with? I’ve almost never been a fan.

I’ll be honest – I came not to praise him, but to bury him.

Clearly, Sack’s “view of the world” is the one most DFLers are issued at graduation, and Sack’s work was more “birdcage” than fridge material. Truth be told, I often considered buying a bird specifically for Sack’s work.

And mine wasn’t the only opinion; I’m told Sack won a Pulitzer or two, which at one point not too long ago wasn’t purely self-parodic.

Anyway, Mr. Sack; all the best in your future endeavors – something I say knowing that anyone the Strib hires these days is going to make us miss your “glory days” in comparison.

  1. You will see some cartoons from Dave Grandlund. He’s a friend of a friend. He’s a sixtyish boomer and a big lefty. We had a great conversation years ago and he doesn’t get it. We discussed the decline of the newspaper as we know it and it’s bias is a big cause for that.

  2. “We as people aren’d defined by our externalities – our jobs, politics, whatever – any more than we are by our social, ethnic or class identity.”

Reliable, go to neocon talking point; reliably wrong.

How about people like Leah Torres, a Dr. Mengele clone who publicly revels in “snipping cords” during her infanticides? Or people that use their positions of power to undermine civilized society, like Howard Zinn, or George Soros?

Excluding politics is also folly in the current year. This isn’t 1955; the Democrat party has adopted a completely new platform that consists of enabling dependency, failure and degeneracy. And the GOP has gone full on “got mine, bro; fuck you”.

You can argue that judging people by immutable traits like race is a position born of ignorance, and to an extent is remains true. Except that in the case of blacks, we have a demographic that makes up 13% of the US population committing 52% of violent crimes. If that knowledge doesn’t inform your behavior when you are among groups of young black guys, you’re just waiting your turn to become a news story.

There are similar disturbing facts regarding the behaviors common among other ethnic and racial groups, but the point is made.

I know most of y’all are too old of dogs to learn new tricks

You can argue that judging people by immutable traits like race is a position born of ignorance, and to an extent is remains true. Race alone doesn’t inherently force outcomes. Except that in the case of blacks, for instance, we have a demographic that makes up 13% of the US population committing 52% of violent crimes. And who fail to graduate high school at a staggering rate between 47% and 55%, even with the laughably lax standards in place.

If that knowledge, and nothing else, doesn’t inform your behavior when you are among groups of young black guys, you’re just waiting your turn to become a news story.

There are similar disturbing facts regarding the behaviors common among other ethnic and racial groups, but the point is made.

I know most of y’all are too old of dogs to learn new tricks and I’m not changing any hearts and minds among the regular commentators here. My hope is that there are a few lurkers smart enough to question what they’ve been taught and told.

  4. “neocon talking point”

More of a bit of Christian belief, but tomayto tomahto.

“How about people like Leah Torres, a Dr. Mengele clone who publicly revels in “snipping cords” during her infanticides?”

Is that because of her ethnicity and class? Or because she’s an evil slag?

  5. It’s directly related to her politics and her job, Mitch….the two externalities you mentioned. In her case, I’m sure mental illness plays a part, but at some level she knows what she’s doing, and approves of it.

(BTW, you’ll never guess who plays “Egor” to Torres’ Frankenstein. An old “friend” of ours…)

It’s fine to hold Christian beliefs. In fact, I believe Christian faith is a glue that holds civilized society together. But Christ said “Go, and sin no more” not, “For the sake of approval, be thou blind to thy neighbors degeneracy and savagery”.

  6. Lefties just can’t do humor. Liberals can, lefties can’t. All the late night talkers get is clapter, not laughter or real applause. “Oh, he’s making fun of someone I am supposed to hate, I will clap.”

Case in point: yesterday a couple of dried up cat lady twitter hags were mocking anyone still complaining about inflation, because it dropped from 8.9% to 8.7%. Wow lets have a party. The asked what Fox news would cover now, the border crises? Baby formula shortage?

Yes troll, your people think it’s funny that parents are worried about feeding their children. Of course these dried up hags don’t have children, they have cats.

  7. So I asked my uncle, who knows just about everything, “What’s a Star Tribune?”

    “It’s a newspaper,” he said.

“What’s that?” I had to ask.

“Think of it like a podcast made out of paper,” he told me.

Now a get it – but who cares about such a weird thing anyway and why is it even noteworthy?

  8. It’s directly related to her politics and her job,

Right. Both of those are things one chooses.

(BTW, you’ll never guess who plays “Egor” to Torres’ Frankenstein. An old “friend” of ours…)

Does the name rhyme with Fee Pee Fliers? Or Flobbin Party?

It’s fine to hold Christian beliefs. In fact, I believe Christian faith is a glue that holds civilized society together. But Christ said “Go, and sin no more” not, “For the sake of approval, be thou blind to thy neighbors degeneracy and savagery”.

“Focusing on the factors that matter to my point” <> blindness.

  9. It’s funny that these pro abortion people are just fine with Pedo Joe sending pallets of baby formula to the southern border. Gotta make sure that the next generation of illegal alien DemoCommie droogs grow up to be big and strong and beholden to them for their lives. Meanwhile, the current ones, will die off. Oh well, as far as the elitists in Pedo Joe’s regime are concerned, those peasants can eat cake.

  10. “ Right. Both of those are things one chooses.”

And the people we are directly inform the choices we make.

These are not immutable traits, over which we have no agency. It’s who we are as people.

Yes, Flobbin has blossomed into a full fledged ghoul, as foul a creature as ever sucked a breath of air; as I predicted xe would.
