There is a an old fantasy book, kind of a classic, called “The Golden.” It was written by a crazy commie (Lucius Shepherd) but it is still pretty good.

Y’know, to get a little bit back on topic, I am looking at first analysis of why the October 7 Hamas attack was so successful.
It’s looking a lot like Israel fell asleep at the switch. Their defenses against incursions from Gaza anticipated a surprise attack by maybe a few dozen terrorists. Unspoken is that the Israelis thought that any large scale attack as we saw on Oct. 7 would be detected ahead of time by Israeli intelligence.
Also the terrorists made the command center that was supposed to coordinate a response to a terrorist incursion a primary target of their attack. It took about three hours to get the proper response organized.
So this was an epic fail by the Israelis. I don’t think it will happen again. The Israelis are usually better about firing dumb ass bureaucrats in uniform than we are.
