SCENE:  Mitch BERG is sitting on the hood of a Dodge, drinking warm beer in the soft summer rain, beneath the light of a giant Exxon sign.  

Avery LIBRELLE putters up to BERG in a Prius and climbs out of the car.  

LIBRELLE:  Hey, Merg!

BERG:  Hey, Avery.

LIBRELLE:  I’ve got a question for you, mister Immigrant Hater.

BERG:  Bla bla bla.  I don’t hate immigrants, and I won’t let a stupid manipulative strawman pass without showing it up as the idiocy it is.

LIBRELLE:  Why do you hate science?  Anyway – so it’s time for you immigration opponents…

BERG:  …We’re not “immigration opponents”.  We oppose illegal immigration.

LIBRELLE:  If NPR says it, it’s settled science.  Anyway – it’s coming time where you have to decide; are immigrants taking our jobs, or are they soaking up welfare dollars?   You can’t have both.

BERG:   Saying the two are mutually exclusive is like saying there’s no way white people could simultaneously produce Beethoven and Jefferson and James Watt while also including people who sit around Walmart parking lots lighting their beer farts and arguing about whether Van Halen is hard rock or heavy metal.

Because it’s a fact that Immigrants are disproportionally on welfare – counter to years of media chanting points – and they are also taking most of the new jobs in the Obama Economy this past seven years.  You’re presenting me a false dilemma – and, given that this policy disporoprtionally affects African-Americans, presenting yourself a real dilemma.

So there is no contradiction.  Fact is, unrestricted immigration of low-skill workers drives down the price of low-skill jobs – which aren’t worth much to begin with, and don’t pay much with the glut of workers, who have families, which disproportionally use welfare.

LIBRELLE:   Why do you hate women?

BERG:   Of course.

    I don’t know about that one, but I believe a “Never Park The Bus” sticker was included when you ordered the “Mac-Groveland” upgrade package for several model years.

    My favorite thing to say when people say anything about the Coexist bumper stickers: Ya’know, If it weren’t for that C, the bumper sticker wouldn’t be needed at all.

    Did you see recently where even ‘The New Republic’ magazine had one of their columns dedicated to the proposition that all this illegal immigration has been hardest on… unskilled and low skilled people (of various hues) who are citizens? Big shocker for the TNR audience that skews lilly white and elitist.
    Speaking of Lilly White, shouldn’t resident Lefty ‘Doggone’ clear up the Prius options for K.O.O.K.S. question?

    It is factually false that immigrants are disproportionately on welfare. Not just my opinion, but an opinion held across the political spectrum, like the arch conservative Cato Institute which found the report you cited to be total crap.

    You do a poor job of fact checking the stuff you post here, Mitch. Shame on you. Score one off you for Librelle.

    Sadly, conservatives are so anti-immigrant they can’t see the fact-forest OR the individual fact-trees.

    The reality is that we get more from immigrants, both legal and undocumented, in our economy and in our government revenue, than we pay out.

    The reality is that immigrants, especially undocumented immigrants, also contribute more to our economy than they receive, and they DO NOT take jobs from American citizens either. Another right wing myth that even many right wingers don’t support.

    You gotta do better than this Mitch; you are badly dropping the ball on fact checking the reliability of your sources.

    according to the obama administration (via ORR):
    “in FY 2013, 91.4 percent of Middle Eastern refugees (accepted to the U.S. between 2008-2013) received food stamps, 73.1 percent were on Medicaid or Refugee Medical Assistance and 68.3 percent were on cash welfare.”
    and
    “Middle Eastern refugees used a number of other assistance programs at slightly lower rates. For example, 36.7 percent received Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), 32.1 percent received Supplemental Security Income (SSI), 19.7 percent lived in public housing, 17.3 percent were on General Assistance (GA), and 10.9 percent received Refugee Cash Assistance (RCA).”

    Do immigrants use more welfare than native-born poor, or only the same amount? Either is TOO MUCH. Immigrants should be ADDING to our society, not TAKING from it. We can’t do much about our own unfortunates, but we don’t need to take in everybody else’s.
