The Germans lost the war, especially on the Eastern Front, for a lot of reasons – Hitler’s strategic meddling, failure to fully mobilize German industry until 1943, weaponized bureaucracy (they had several intelligence agencies that did’t like each other, and no less than seven different organizations providing ground troops by the end of the war – and others.
But the devotion of immense logistic and industrial power to running extermination camps and feeding people into them contributed mightilly.
Even by the end of 1944, when Soviet troops were into Poland and German artillery were being rationed to a couple rounds a day and tanks didn’t have enough fuel to do anything but fight and German soldiers were verging on malnutrition and chronically short of ammo, the Party refused to divert trains from hauling people to the camps.
It was a matter of priorities.
As to the notion Hitler would have left the Jews alone if we hadn’t entered the war? I mean, read Mein Kampf (I have – in English and German, an fast that should make Kraephammer romp and cavort with childish glee, but fuck him). Or better yet, don’t – it’s a terrible read in any language. But there’s no arguing his intentions toward the Jews, there or in the 1933 Nuremberg Laws.
I was wrong earlier – the Wannsee conference happened just after the US entered the war. But the conference built on ideas that’d been floating around since long before Mein Kampf.
For example, the day after Pearl Harbor, the Germans conducted their first experiments on mass gassing. . They were impatient with the pace involved with working people to death (which was how most people died in “Concentration” camps, along with disease, starvation and random executions), and the cost, messiness and psychological toll on German troops of just machine-gunning them all to death. Germany and the US wouldn’t be at war for another three days.

But the energy the US and UK put into building trucks and LIberty ships and not only radar but disposable radar-triggered fuses for antiaricraft shells, the Germans put into killing people. It’s one of the reasons their war effort relied on horses and mules for 70%. of its tactical and operational logistics, had to ration its artillery shells, and was forever short of just about everything.
They had their priorities.

I’ve thought about starting my own blog but then the question arises: comments, or no comments? If “no comments,” readers get frustrated at not being able to comment. If “yes comments,” then jerks post comments which idiots claim are my views because, after all, the comments appeared on my blog so therefore I must welcome and endorse the jerk’s comments. Which raises the next question: monitor comments or don’t monitor comments, which not only raises the “publisher/platform” Section 230 question but also increases the amount of my time required to police the sandbox squabbles.
