I’m not sure whose bright idea it was to put Sen. Nicole Mitchell (DFL – Woodbury) on the stand yesterday.

Maybe the defence was hoping the sheer overkill would spawn a sympathy vote in the jury?

I watched part of the cross. Brutal but fair. I suppose the defense is angling for a hung jury because of sympathy. The fact that she was in the position to make laws controlling the rest of us is even more galling. Pretty typical for a liberal. Laws for thee but not for me.
I spent some time in the Facebook comments on Wednesday explaining to people why this even went to trial. Those points explain her taking the Stand too.
Nicole “I’m bad at this” Mitchell’s attorney has already moved to have at least one of the charges tossed claiming vindictive prosecution. I’m pretty sure they went into this knowing that she’s cooked at Trial, so they’re eyeing the Appeal. If they can get the County Attorney, who’s personally overseeing this Case, to get nasty to Senator Cat Burglar while cross examining her, that helps that narrative.
And as Mitch stated, there’s always the possibility that they could have a sympathetic juror that refuses to vote to convict.
One would figure someone with a law degree would have learned that precious few defendants actually manage to debunk allegations during cross examination. I tend to agree with others that believe that Mitchell’s main hope is brain dead jurors who won’t convict because DFL.
And on the light side, it strikes me that with a stepdaughter who breaks into her house, perhaps the stepmother has valid grounds for paranoia.
To be honest, having aging parents and such, I get how when a parent dies or becomes disabled, sometimes precious memories get misplaced. In my family, some of my mom’s things were kept by my stepdad because he couldn’t bear to part with them yet. But since those things were not necessary for me to live well, obviously I didn’t break into my stepdad’s house to get them. There are better ways of addressing these things than what Mitchell did here.
The judge in this case should be at a minimum censured for delaying the trial, but I also blame the prosecutor for it. I’m sure that DFeLon Mitchell’s lawya was hoping that her stepmother’s mental clarity would deteriorate further, hoping to trip her up during testimony because she either was confused on or forgot key details.

Which delay are you referring to? The first one was constitutionally mandated, and the second one was pretty short and really had no effect on everything.
