I am constantly reminded of the old Clinton administration. When they were found out about something and forced to choose an explanation that was either incompetence or criminality, they went for the incompetence explanation every time.
Democrats have graduated from that simple choice and now, as in the example here, routinely engage in a criminal level of stupidity. We cannot much longer survive in a Democrat idiocracy.

The same type of people will without critical thought accept that, out of tens of thousands of protestors on 6 Jan 2021, hundreds entered the Capitol, and that those hundreds somehow represent a majority of the GOP. Simultaneously, the riots of the summer of 2020 were “mostly peaceful”, were it not for the as-yet-unproven actions of the right-wing boogeyman.
Twenty years ago, my girlfriend’s brother was engaged to this gal, and we had dinner with the couple and both sets of parents. It was around the time the NTSB prelim report was released on the plane crash that killed Wellstone. I found that the bride’s dad was an aviation enthusiast, so I casually mentioned it in conversation. Big mistake. I got to hear his unhinged theories of how the Bush administration had shot the plane down. I recall my internal voice screaming “Are you insane!”, but like you, I opted to just change the topic.
If I could do it over again, I wouldn’t hold my tongue, and not just because my girlfriend also turned out to be unhinged. Such fact-deprived BS needs to be openly mocked, lest it become conventional wisdom.

Not to mention: If you look at pictures taken at the capitol that day, you’ll see lots and lots of people both outside on the steps and inside the halls wearing black masks, black ski masks, black helmets, olive and/or black body armor, a big backpack, and dressed in black. A lot of them had long scraggly hair as well. But they might have a MAGA hat or a Trump 20202 flag draped over their shoulders. I can GUARAN-EFFING-TEE you that those are not real MAGA people. Those are Antifa or Antifa-allied people. How do I know? Real MAGA people don’t dress like that. They rarely if ever have unkempt/caveman hair. They don’t do that because the mindset of a MAGA person is not one that needs to “make a statement” by their non-standard outward appearance. They also don’t feel the need to hide their identity when they are among compatriots. Were there some true MAGA supporters in the capitol that day? Undoubtedly. But I’d be willing to bet that at least half if not more of the people inside that day were there to cause trouble and make MAGA look bad. There were plenty of leaked and not so hidden communiques out there saying “Make yourself look like a MAGA supporter to give them a bad name. Do whatever it takes to bring negative attention upon them.”
If your “proof” that those people were real MAGA supporters is because they were dressed in black with body armor, but they had a MAGA hat? You’d be laughed out of any 101 level Intro to Law class

Bill, dunno about the “are these guys really Trump voters?”, as a lot of people who I’d never have picked as Trump supporters, especially black men and Hispanics, nevertheless did end up supporting him. So would I be surprised if, say, libertarian looking people decided Trump was their best shot? Certain the woman who was killed was a real supporter, no?
Don’t get me wrong; in our political mood today, you cannot dismiss the probability of agents provacateurs and the like. I just think we need more information than just “these don’t look like the Republicans we know.”
