Shot in the Dark

A Good Guy With A Gun

Berg‘s 18th law is still in effect – but initial reports indicate that an armed “Good Samaritan“ in Indiana killed a spree killer early in his attack:

The Greenwood Police Department confirmed Sunday that a lone shooter, believed to be an adult male, entered the food court of the mall around 6 p.m. with a rifle and several magazines of ammo. The suspect then shot into the mall, killing three people and injuring two more.

GPD also confirmed Sunday that the shooter was shot and killed by a Good Samaritan who was armed with a handgun. The man who shot the suspect, identified as a 22-year-old from Bartholomew County, had a legal gun permit and is fully cooperating with police.

I’m pretty sure Indiana is a constitutional carry state with no “legal gun permit” needed – but why quibble?

This is how mass spree shootings get stopped.

UPDATE: Aaaah, social media. Where people who can’t tell the difference between a firing pin and a bipod are suddenly experts on close quarter battle tactics and self-defense law.

Oh look, it’s our weekly American mass shooting. Wonder which shopping mall, movie theater, grocery store, family parade, elementary, middle or high school is going to get shot up in about 7 days.

Oh look, last time it was “well, I guess that disproves good guy with a gun.”

Now that there was a good guy with a gun he kind of skips over that.

    Inconsistent much?

By the way the news site I saw:

Has hero in scare quotes. Our media.

    Also our “media”:

Muriel Bowser, mayor of DC, which is all but a war zone, was on Farce the Nation, but was not asked about crime, was asked about Jan 6.

Cluebat mediots: no one cares about Jan 6

Emery: A good guy with a gun stopping a mass shooting is a myth, never happen.

Mitch: It just did. Good guys with guns end all mass shootings, whether the good guy is wearing a uniform or not. We don’t need more gun control, we need more good guys, particularly in places like malls and schools.

Emery: A good guy with a gun stopping a mass shooting in a school is a myth, never happen.

Everyone is a good guy right up until the moment that he isn’t …

At least 4 people died. Everyone should be relieved that in this instance an armed bystander helped limit the carnage. But wouldn’t it better serve our safety if people didn’t have unlimited legal access to semi-automatic rifles that they can bring into public places and start shooting up random people in the first place?

Emery, let’s be specific; three innocents and one waste of oxygen died. The good guy with a gun saved the lives of many other innocents and also spared the state the expense of a trial, incarceration, and execution.

Yes, it’s hard to prevent a thug from getting off the first few shots, but we should be glad the perp didn’t get a chance to fire more, reload, and the like.

E, are you suggesting that since 4 people died, and 4 people is the definition of ‘mass shooting,’ this Good Guy did NOT prevent a ‘mass shooting,’ he merely helped limit the magnitude? The ‘mass shooting’ threshold was met so therefore, a Good Guy with a Gun did not prevent a ‘mass shooting’?

I expect that if the Good Guy had stopped the killer when only two people had died, you’d argue that 2 people isn’t enough to be a ‘mass shooting’ and who knows, maybe he’d have stopped killing at 2, so the ‘mass shooting’ still wasn’t prevented by a Good Guy with a Gun.

Heads you win, tails I lose, this is your notion of rational discussion?

Who knew there was so many white supremacists out there randomly shooting people. In blue cities no less.

Female family members preparing for a long road trip. Last night, we had a planning meeting. They have to pass through at least one shithole state without reciprocity, so no firearms.

Lay out routes; go over safety (keep doors locked when not moving; situational awareness, etc.); plan gas stops and book hotel in exburb. If gas stations, restaurants have numbers of the vibrant community around, keep going.

Suddenly, I noticed “Jane” was silently weeping.

    >”What’s wrong?”
    >”This is like settlers traveling through hostile country in the 1800’s. We really shouldn’t have to live like this.”

Jane is was a “Big Tent Conservative” (We’re all the same, it’s good to bring gays into the party, NAXALT, etc).

    She’s had a breakthrough.

Blade I’m sure you know this but if the only problem is a pass-thru state it’s not much of a problem.

    Emery lied:

No one in Indiana has unlimited legal access to semi-automatic rifles.
When you start with a lie, there is no way to go but down.

Oh, MP, you know as well as well as I that in a red state like Indiana it’s easier to buy a semi-automatic rifle than it is to buy a book.

I guess I missed Emery’s post lamenting the Chicago gun death toll over the July 4 weekend, ten killed, with 62 injured. That’s not Highland Park, that is Chicago proper.
    Prolly never heard of it.

So it was the fault of the rifle being available. What if he had used a pistol?

Three bystanders die so one hero can be proclaimed. In business you call that operating at a loss. Outside of the Russian military I don’t think anyone calls that ratio ‘success’.

Utter bullshit. The gun didn’t kill anyone, the person who used it killed people.
It would all have been a group hug between the victime and the shooter if only that gun hadn’t jumped and started shooting.
The reason Emery peddles shabby, shop worn arguments is because he believes them himself.
The mall, BTW, was a “gun free zone.”

“Three bystanders die so one hero can be proclaimed.” SO he can be proclaimed. Meaning it was all intentional.

Well, yeah. It takes a lot of time and effort to set up these mass shootings. First, you need find someone sick enough in the head to believe that shooting a bunch of strangers is the smart way to become famous. Then, you have to keep him off his meds while you equip him with the right props and visual aids (nobody wants to see photos of a mass shooter dressed in a cowboy hat, chaps, boots carrying six-guns, that’s so Roy Rogers). Finding a place to commit the atrocity isn’t so hard – there are lots of gun-free zones – but transporting him in your personal vehicle when he’s wacked out and carrying guns is a challenge, let me tell you.

If you can get all the moving parts assembled and pointed in the right direction, sure, you can get your slaughter to make the news. But it’s a pain in the neck to put it all together, let me tell you. Even with the NSA tapping psychologists’ medical records to find candidates and the FBI grooming losers online, it takes forever to set up.

Three dead just so one hero can be proclaimed. Be glad it was as many as that. The hero could have shot him sooner and ruined the whole thing.

Since rAT believes it’s White Supremacists doing all the shooting, I’m sure he’s comfortable in people DT Minneapolis, and spends lots of time there supporting Diversity and Inclusion(tm).

The downside, of course, is he’s a fucking idiot and is a walking bullseye. Be a pity if he got in the spray zone when a couple members of the Vibrant and Diverse Community(tm) decide to settle their Fedbook smack talk on the street, and got his empty head ventilated.

There’d be no heroes for the Star Trib to denigrate, and no Go Fund Me to spare his daughter (ER nurse!) the expense of dealing with his remains. Just a fat, stupid idiot leaving a mess on the sidewalk.

The Indiana shooter was a 20 year old man from a very troubled background. Messy divorce between parents who were probably too poor to handle a clean divorce. Abandoned by both parents as a consequence of their divorce, cared for by an older brother who seems to hate both his parents (wonder why?).
The good samaritan was a 22 year old with a pistol.
The Indiana shooter had a pistol, though he did not use it. Wonder how he got his hands on it?

Blade- re: the exurbs. The “vibrancy” of the Twin cities is leaking north. Forest Lake crime stats are beginning to look more like the Twin Cities than like rural Minnesota.
There is one bridge over the Saint Croix between Stillwater and Taylors Falls, a distance of nearly thirty miles. That bridge, the Hwy 243 bridge that crosses the river at Osceola, is being shut down in 2024 for two years so it can be replaced. As a Polk County WI guy, I am beginning to see the advantages of that.

^ I hate to say it, but E’s sarcastic comment is right on target.

The solution to criminals shooting at cops is NOT for cops to shoot back. It’s for cops to be disarmed, along with the rest of the general population, so criminals can shoot at anybody they please with no risk of harm to the criminal.

Otherwise – if we let cops and legally armed citizens shoot back at criminals – people could get hurt, particularly members of historically marginalized communities (racial minorities, mentally ill) who are many times more likely to be doing the shooting. Diversity is more important than safety.

Apple Valley’s vibrancy is on the rise! https://alphanews.org/two-men-charged-in-apple-valley-shooting-that-left-a-woman-dead/
This was a full on “gunfight at the OK Corral” vibe. The only person killed was a woman that, in theory, neither of the other two gunmen was shooting at.
    She was shot ten times.
But it turns out she had a gun as well, but apparently never had a chance to use it before she went down in a hail of bullets fired by her son and her ex boyfriend.
And, of course we have this:
“Neither Selmon nor Pryor has a permit to carry a firearm. Pryor has a 2021 gross misdemeanor conviction for carrying a firearm without a permit. However, he was ordered no time to serve and was placed on probation to the court for two years by Hennepin County Judge Edward Thomas Wahl.”
Wahl was appointed by Dayton in 2012. In 2014 he ran unopposed, in 2020 he received over 99% of the vote.
The voters are definitely getting what they wanted in the 4th judicial district.
