Heh, I refer to us IT techs at work… the ones who actually do the work of “twisting knobs, pushing buttons, turning screws and solving customer issues” instead of leading teams, managing projects, managing teams, or otherwise making policy decisions…as “boots on the ground” techs.

Add any other rarely before used word or term that normally is reserved for those familiar with, or whose actual activities can be described by that piece of language, that suddenly starts a chain reaction of repetition by those whose actual activities include public communication. Reporterettes using gritty street slang, media types using “cop talk”, and anyone who has not served (like me) but use military language (‘Nam for Vietnam always bugged me when used that way).

You can’t put Boots on the Ground until the diplomats have worked out an Status of Forces Agreement and the lawyers have polished up the Rules of Engagement.
