Let Them Eat Beans

The defining jape of the current economic contortions may have been a piece from last week by Teresa Ghilarducci at Bloomberg, had some “advice” for Americans making “less than $300,000 a year” and coping with inflation:

Inflation stings most if you earn less than $300K. Here’s how to deal:

➡ Take the bus

➡ Don’t buy in bulk

➡ Try lentils instead of meat

➡ Nobody said this would be fun

Ignore, for a moment, that the price of Lentils is apparently outstripping the price of meat:

…and that very few Americans live where buses are, much less get them to where they need to be, and that no s**t it’s not “fun”, seeing your retirement savings getting chewed up and spat out by the inflation that your party brought on.

This particular line needs to be held up against every Democrat, everywhere, this fall.

  1. OK, sure, the price of lentils is going up a lot, but keep in mind that meat is about 2/3 to 70% water, while lentils are dried. Hence that $2-$3 pound of beans/lentils probably gives you as much nutrition in terms of macronutrients (slightly more carb/less fat) as about 3 pounds of meat retailing for $10 or more.

So it’s still kinda brutal, but beans/lentils are still a nice alternative to meat as prices go up. In my family, the big thing is not the prices of the basic foods, but rather my kids’ tendency to want to buy processed foods instead of cooking. Brutal on the budget.

  2. Shades of Carter? I’m surprised she didn’t tell us to turn down the thermostat and put on a sweater.

  3. not sure why we shouldn’t buy in bulk, according to Comrade Ghilarducci… wouldn’t doing so make things a bit cheaper?

  4. Jeff, they don’t like you buying in bulk because it gives you thoughts of self-sufficiency and resilience. They like it when you’re thinking you are just a handswidth away from the end of your rope, because then you are dependent on blessings from the Capitol.

  5. Jeff, their drool is not coming from a place of reasoned intelligence.

Like the Professor says “they don’t care about you, they just don’t want you blaming them.”

Totally a “let them eat cake moment.”

  6. I’m thinking “don’t buy in bulk” is because they think that if you do, you put further stress on a supply chain they’ve FUBAR’d. It’s the same motivation for Fauci lying about face masks a couple of years back.

  7. But, but, bikebubba, we have a MARRIED gay man as Sec Trans, total intersectionality! He’ll fix it! Just like being a (terrible) mayor of a small town.

  8. Eat the bug, live in the pod, ride the bus and give your seat (and cell phone) to any POC’s that ask and STFU. We’re protecting Democracy ™ and sacrifices must be made (by you, zek).

    lol

  9. Kinlaw, at least he did the best thing he could have done when the supply chain crisis was at its worst–he stayed home and did nothing to help. You’ve got to be thankful for little mercies like his maternity leave.
