There’s a case to be made that we fought the wrong war in Afghanistan; that we should have gone in, rooted out the Taliban, and installed the best awful people have given them three steps toward the door and left in 2003.

There’s an even better case to be made that nation-building, especially in a place like Afghanistan, just can’t work.

I’m all ears.

It was America’s longest war by a fair turn, and it needed to end, somehow, someday.

But the idea that burning ithrough hundreds of billions of dollars of “investment” and just plain pouring money on the ground, and the lives of 2,372 American servicepeople, and it all ends with a Saigon moment? One our administration practically begged for, and seems unable to comprehend?

That is a little hard to swallow.

It should be, shouldn’t it?

    No administration who wanted out could have avoided what we’re seeing now. This is Afghanistan being Afghanistan, and there’s nothing anybody can do to stop it.

    Saigon all over again. A government this corrupt was never going to stand on its own. Johnson and Nixon kept their war going, afraid of political backlash.

    Biden knows he’s assuming great political risk and acts anyways. He is a man of uncommon courage.

    I don’t care if we abandon the Afghan government. I don’t care if we stay there for a hundred years, though it seems like a waste of time and money.
    What I care about is allowing the sworn enemy of the US to get its hands on billions of dollars of our military equipment, and abandoning our Afghani dependents to the Taliban.
    It did not have to be this way, and we have Slow Joe’s words and actions that show us that he did not think that it would turn into a rout.
    So, how did he come to that conclusion? Is it his mistake, or his advisors’ mistake? Either way Biden ends up covered in crap.

    I am old enough to remember the fall of Saigon (as seen on TV). This is the Dems, doing the same thing, again, because (as in 1975) their party was dominated by America-hating radical leftists.
    We should never forget that older betrayal of our allies. The Vietnamese, and their president (Thieu, I think) were willing to fight, they needed weapons and ammo, the war was mostly being fought by the South Vietnamese at that time (remember “Vietnamization”?).
    The Dems in congress refused to vote Thiue _anything_. “Go and die.” they told him, in effect.
    Back in the 80s I worked with a Vietnamese guy. Good fella, tho he never did learn to speak English very well. He flew for the Vietnamese air force. He told me, once, that when the end of Saigon was near, and they were out of ordnance, the US advisers told him and his comrades they had to fly to Thailand where they would pick up new ordnance from the Thais & return to Vietnam to fight. Instead, when he got to Thailand, the authorities took his plane and put him in a refugee camp.
    And continuing the parody of reason they use to this day, they invert morality. They are not evil for their betrayal, you are evil for not betraying our allies. Soon we will hear that the Afghan people who worked for us were really very evil, and did not deserve our protection, even though it was promised to them.

    Well, at least this should put an end to the idea that Biden is some sort of expert on foreign policy.
    When I look back, using the web, on how he gained this rep, it seems like a lot of self-invention, aided and abetted by the usual media idiots.
    As senator, Biden got himself on a lot of FP committees. He had a lot of opinions about US FP (mostly wrong, as proved by the passage of time).
    Kind of like his rep as somehow representing the “working class.” Look at his record as senator, he represented credit card companies and class action lawyers.
    He was a senator of a state with the size and population of combined Hennepin and Ramsey counties.
    I admit that I am kind of waiting to see how badly Obama cuts Biden over this debacle. I suppose that is wicked and a sin.
