There’s a case to be made that we fought the wrong war in Afghanistan; that we should have gone in, rooted out the Taliban, and installed the best awful people have given them three steps toward the door and left in 2003.

There’s an even better case to be made that nation-building, especially in a place like Afghanistan, just can’t work.

I’m all ears.

It was America’s longest war by a fair turn, and it needed to end, somehow, someday.

But the idea that burning ithrough hundreds of billions of dollars of “investment” and just plain pouring money on the ground, and the lives of 2,372 American servicepeople, and it all ends with a Saigon moment? One our administration practically begged for, and seems unable to comprehend?

That is a little hard to swallow.

It should be, shouldn’t it?

    We’ve been in Afghanistan 20 years — spent over 3 Trillion dollars and trained the Afghan Army and we still haven’t been successful. Why would anyone think that if we continued our presence for 21,22 or 23 years would be anymore successful?

    I’ll say this — how could the Biden administration be so surprised (and unprepared) for the Afghan military having no interest in fighting once the US announced we were out?

    A huge part of the problem was and is trying to impose a country on tribespeople. You ask them what they are and the answer is regional not national. And that makes sense given the history. They had the foreign idea of being a country thrust upon them. They didn’t draw the lines, outsiders did.

    They’ve also spent the last 50 years being occupied by either outsiders or segments of their own population, and the history of outsiders using the country as a battlefield goes back to Russia and Britain in the 1800s. Small wonder wait and see was and is the mentality vs buy in. It’s logical from their perspective.

    Our military and our national politicians claimed they had learned the lessons of Vietnam and would not repeat the same mistake. I am convinced they didn’t learn a thing.

    Mitch, I will avoid the “I told you so’s” but am struck by a sense of deja vu in that many people, me included, felt both our war in Iraq and in Afghanistan were poorly thought through, and thought it at the time. Rather than listening, many people at the time (cough) said, “No, no, stay, stay, kill the terrorists until there are no more.” This despite the clear warning from the Shia Muslims in Iraq that the worst mistake we could make would be to stay. In Afghanistan it was far worse. They (like the Vietnamese) had 1,000 years of expelling and resisting occupiers. They saw us as nothing else. Our course was to punish the Taliban and leave, and nothing else. Iraq was an even worse choice. Houssien had nothing to do with 9/11 and removing him simply lifted the lid on a powder keg. Those who did not learn from Vietnam, made the same mistakes in Iraq and Afghanistan. They had American hubris, American arrogance for that matter. The native population has to WANT you to be there for your presence in a country to work. No amount of swagger, no amount of killing, will change that, and in fact, it will likely harden their hearts.

    I rode in a taxi in DC recently with an Afghani driver. He said to me the mistake we make is not understanding that Taliban, since even the time of the Soviet occupation, FAR more meant resistance fighter, resistance to occupation, than anything religious.

    So, while avoiding the “I told you’s”, as I recall our conversations, I will point out that you said we lost Vietnam due to the press. It may be humiliating to watch a Saigon moment, and it certainly carries some shame, some ignominy, it is the ignominy of hubris, the eating of crow, and we brought it on ourselves. Blame not those who enforce it on us, nor those who “let it happen” right now, this moment has been coming for 20 years, and for those who refused to listen and learn (from facts and history), it has been coming since Saigon fell.

    What went wrong was instead of a focused, short-term incursion of Afghanistan with limited goals, it became a grand nation-building enterprise. Even a cursory knowledge of the region shows why it’s called the Graveyard of Empires.

    The Pentagon and military leaders believed stalemate was preferable to defeat. Biden and even Trump knew an open-ended commitment was not in US interests. Biden made a very tough call, but that’s what leadership is.

    We left enough small arms and armored vehicles in place to equip 2 Divisions of the Taliban army. The US Central Command said it had left no less than 17,074 pieces of equipment in Afghanistan. God only knows how much ammunition was left in place.

    There will be no more Toyota technicals for the lads, hell no. They’ll parade in state of the art military vehicles. And that disgraceful truth, all of it, belongs in Pedo Joe, his feckless Chairman of the Joint Chief’s and Secretary of Defense’s disgraced laps.

    No one could be happier than Kameltoe. Who could dress her down now for the fucking, epic disaster at the Southern border while her boss is arming, equipping and retreating from a bunch of desert rats?

    The smart move would have been to evacuate Ramstein Air Base in Germany, and relocate everything to Bagram Air Base to provide a powerful presence in the Middle East…and within the sphere of influence of both Russia and China.

From what Pompeo says, Trump told the taliban negotiators that if they went back on their word and the result was a single American casualty, he would hold taliban leadership personally responsible & drone them. That doesn’t sound like “trust” to me.

    Below them was a city of traffic jams and roundabouts choked by cars—many of them filled with Afghans trying to reach the airport’s relative safety. Dark smoke, presumably from burning documents, rose from the presidential palace.

    This really a failure at a lot of levels. Not just Biden, but our intelligence services and, of course, the State Department.

    As a part of the 2020 Doha deal, Trump and Pompeo made an agreement with the Taliban to lift sanctions against the group and have 5,000 Taliban prisoners released in exchange for a 3-month cease-fire. Those prisoners now control Afghanistan and are “raping 9 year old girls”.

    I have to credit Biden and Trump with the difficult decision to pull out. They will be criticized for this decision.

    We’ve learned nothing since Vietnam — only this time out there was no draft and no organized protests so it went on longer. What a waste.

    He ran on his ability to accurately assess information from these briefings, among other things.
