The assassination of Soleimani does present some gnarly questions: he was a fair target under current international agreements about terrorism – but one could raise questions about whether it was a great idea. Also whether it was an act of war.

On the other hand, we’re treated to the spectacle of watching politicians, deep-staters, media drones and celebs who batted not an eyelash over Obama’s constant, intense campaign of drone, air and special ops “hits”, complaining about Orange LIterally Hitler Man doing it to a target that actually matters, but up to whom The LIghtworker sucked…

…and having to choose, in public, during an election year, with whom to side in public.

There have been a couple of Iraq war veterans speaking about this, including a General, on the news this morning. They pointed out that President Trump has been very measured over the past few years, as Iran has constantly poked the bear, so to speak. The embassy in Iraq is U.S. soil. The question the left wing losers have to address is why was this Iranian commander was in Iraq in the first place? It has been pointed out that he is most likely behind the attacks, allegedly carried out by Iraqis. Further, this criminal has provided ISIS and Taliban fighters with most of the IEDs that have killed hundreds of U.S., Iraqi and Afghan soldiers. I say that this was a surgical operation, designed to minimize collateral casualties. As Mitch points out, the Dems and their media propaganda masters, had no problems with the assassination of Anwar Al-Awlaki, who became the first U.S. citizen to be targeted and killed by a U.S. drone strike without the rights of due process being afforded. President Barack Obama ordered the strike. His son, Abdulrahman al-Awlaki (a 16-year-old U.S. citizen), was killed in a U.S. drone strike two weeks later.
They also forget the Obama/Hillary assault on Libyan, resulting in the death of Mohammar Khadafi, without congressional approval.

I rarely watch the news channels, but this AM I turned on CNN & Fox to see how they were reporting the death of Soleimani.
According to both networks, by killing Soleimani, Trump has brought us close to war with Iran or at the very least provoked Iran into retaliating.

There will be no war. Iran’s ability to retaliate is strictly limited. They could set off a few car bombs, I suppose. The mullah’s may finally understand that they, personally, are in the gunsights of American military & intelligence. Iraqi head of the Shia militias, with both of whom the US coordinated the offensive against Isis in Iraq.

Regardless of whose side one takes — US, Iran, third party or neutral — this assassination has laid bare the incoherence of US Middle East policy.

Our non-com military rank and file are as good as any we’ve had, and we have without doubt the baddest ass weapon inventory in the world, but the officer corps are still full of Obama’s cunts, too busy making sure uniformed tranny’s get free tuck and roll jobs to command troops.

I also don’t believe anything this administration says without evidence, any more than I ever will any other.

If it was important to take this guy out, a sniper could have slipped in, blown his brains out from 1000 yds and slipped off without a fuss. If Trump wanted to flex muscle in Iraq to keep Iran honest, he shouldnt have recalled the damn troops.

Look, whether you want to admit it or not, we’ve been in a war with Iran for 40 years now. They’ve killed Americans, and consistently paid other people to kill Americans, they’ve been striking at our military for years, and they’ve been quite happy to tell folks about it.

And for years, we’ve been acting as if their avowed motivations and actions were otherwise. That’s why the Quds force general was quite open about his maneuvers. He knew that he’d been tracked for years (the generals have admitted they had snipers with sights on him before before the upper echelons decided not to take the shot), and no matter what he did, the American’s leadership never had the guts to do to him what he was doing to Americans. He didn’t really bother with spy craft, he even took selfies with the militias in Iraq that had attacked Americans, so he was utterly unconcerned and contemptuous of America’s leadership.

As for what changed, that’s a good question. It could be anything. Trump may have had intelligence of new attacks, as he said. It could have been the attack on the American embassy that pushed him. In a completely cynical frame of mind, I could suggest that he caught wind of a plan to take over the American embassy right before the election to try and oust him. I can think of 10,000 reasons he might have chosen to change the policy of America, and honestly, we’ll never really know why.

All I know is that it was the right thing to do. Soleimani was the public point man in a war being waged that has cost thousands of Americans their lives. At this point, the mullahs have to decide if continuing their efforts as they are is worth putting their own lives on the line, because Trump has demonstrated that there are limits to what he’ll tolerate that are different than his predecessors, and that leadership positions in an openly hostile foreign government aren’t protections.

Now I might agree with Kushner on some things and disagree on others, but with that degree, he’s at least passed some tests and written something halfway coherent about history.

The Iranians have a lot of scope for a sophisticated response not least because in the Trump administration they have an adversary that is the least adept in generations. The Iranians could move to further divide the American public on its support for a militarized foreign policy across the Greater Middle East or a new policy of disengagement of military forces from the region. There is a great deal of war weariness among the American public.

Overall, Iran can continue and strengthen its Anaconda-like strategy to apply constant pressure to compel long-term withdrawal of the Americans from the Greater Middle East. The job is half accomplished — stay the course.

The Iranians can further divide the Europeans from the Americans while negotiating sanctions relief and a return to the nuclear agreement and wrong foot American diplomacy.

Iran can divide the Far East oil consumers from American foreign policy in the region.
Iran can further weaken the standing of the Arab autocracies in the Gulf States and Egypt from public opinion in the Muslim world.

Iran can work with Russia on consolidating power in Syria while also strengthening its suzerainty over Iraq and Lebanon.

Lots of creative opportunities — turn it into a game of the shrewd versus the dumb.

Sure, and we can do the same. All your strategies seem to ignore the internal pressure in Iran and Iraq against the Iranian regime. You neglect their internal pressures as the Iranian economy crumbles and the mullahs have to resort to shooting their own people. You ignore the celebrations in Iraq supporting Soleimani’s reaching room temperature.

Right now Iran is struggling. Iran targeted a US base and killed a contractor. The US responded and took out a couple dozen assets and nearly as may SCUD rockets that Iran can’t afford to replace. Iran responded by attacking the US embassy, but Trump trumped that response and took out the top Iranian commanders in Iraq, not just the two blown up but the capture of several others.

And Trump hasn’t even started with attacks on Iranian soil if need be. Iran has 3 major refineries and about 8 minor ones. Take out their refineries and their economy shuts down. They had massive protests over raising prices from $0.10/gal, how will they handle a complete lack of fuel? All from just one salvo of cruise missiles.

You forget a critical fact: Trump is not an internationalist like Obama. He looks out for Americans first, all others as need be. Iran might be able to stop Persian Gulf shipping for a while, but the US is energy self sufficient these days. Sure, Europe will crap its pants, but if your goal isn’t to suck up to a bunch of European parasites like Obama did you have a lot more degrees of freedom in direct action and “unconventional strategies” on the US side as well.

^^ First, the mullahs in Tehran will neither be so bold or so foolish as to directly confront the US or Israel. To do so would be a provocation which would likely invite the gravest retaliation, which likely would threaten the ability of the Islamic Republic to stay in power, given rising dissatisfaction in Iran and the region with it and its proxies. The recent protests in Iran and Lebanon illustrate the mullahs’ somewhat tenuous hold on power.

What Iran likely will do is split off the US from its regional and NATO allies. An successful attack on oil facilities in KSA or oil shipping/infrastructure in the Strait of Hormuz would disrupt the world economy, but Trump likely couldn’t get a level of support from the US public (especially in an election year and given his past promises to disentangle the US from the region) to credibly respond. An Iranian inspired/supported attack on the US embassy is different than taking a shot at MBS and the Saudi royal family. The world is awash in oil, and Europe and Japan would feel the disruption far more than the US.

So if Iran attacks KSA, the US likely only responds half- heartedly. Iran can threaten the UAE (either through attacking tankers or the ADCOP pipeline between Habshan and Fujairah), and the UAE will likely cave. The UAE economy is weakening, their important real estate sector is suffering already, and Dubai is counting on Expo 2020 to turn things around. If the region turns into a war zone, it’s likely that tourism will suffer. Turkey is a NATO member in name only, and if Iran pushes common cause in crushing the Kurds, Iran doesn’t have to work hard to peel Turkey further away from the US. Iraq likely goes further toward Iran (public
outrage over sovereignty issues and the killing of the Shiite militia leaders with Soleimani) , and may ask the US to withdraw its forces from the country.

Allies like the UK, Germany, France and Japan weren’t consulted on the Soleimani strike, and were already irritated by the earlier American unilateral withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear monitoring deal. These countries get far more of their oil from the region, so they won’t want to push the Iranians any harder.

The US should prepare for Iranian retaliation, I think it’s unlikely that any meaningful preparation can be done in concert with others. Trump took the decision to escalate matters with Iran alone, and the US will likely have to navigate the consequences alone as well.

If killing the general directing the troops that attacked our embassy is enough for France, Germany and Japan to declare they are no longer our friends and don’t want our help anymore, then I guess we’ll simply have to honor their wishes, pack up our military forces, and go home leaving them to defend themselves against threats from Russia and China. Downside, we lose some cushy duty stations. Upside, we’ll no longer be obligated to spend billions defending our allies which frees up money to build The Wall with Mexico. Oh no, don’t throw us into that briar patch, Br’er Mullah!

Trump doesn’t get it and never will.

Obama clearly understood that there would be no lasting peace in the Middle East unless the US and Iran reached and kept a nuclear containment deal then built up a more comprehensive working relationship off that starting point. Trump threw the six nation nuclear containment deal in the trash for nothing gained beyond a day’s worth of tweets to his supporters and a steady loss of security for America and America’s allies.
