Unintended Consequences, Again And Again

The starting pay for order takers at Minnesota fast food joints will increase to nearly $10 per hour next year.

In completely unrelated news, fast food joints are replacing order takers with touch screens.  Customers like them better.  And they’re cheaper long-term.

Proof that Liberals were right all along – raising the minimum wage does not loweremployment rates.   For the people who make touch screens.

    Maybe I’m just overly personable, which is ironic given my profession as an engineer,but it strikes me that something is very different about people prefer a touch screen to interacting with a person. I would suggest that it might have something to do with how we’re raising young people–on one side, too many fast food workers are pretty surly, and on the other, so are a lot of the rest of us.

    BB: It’s not just the “surly” workers. Far more often for me, it’s the workers who can’t understand simple spoken English well enough to get the order correct, or who don’t care enough to try.
