Deflating Garrison Keillor has been very, very good to me.
Don't get me wrong. I listen to Prairie Home Companion just about weekly. The music is usually great, and some of the comedy is pretty dang good. I like it. So sue me.
But in all things artistic, it is best to love the art and avoid the artist.
And with no "artist" is it as important as Garrison Keillor. I've dealt with him before, and my impressions are shared by many people who've worked with him; he's obsequious to his "betters", and, say reports from reliable sources, abusive and contemptuous to his subordinates.
He brings his sneering contempt for all those "lower" than him to his politics; poking holes in this has been very good to me (the linked post was my first Instalanche, and put this blog on the map).
Keillor's unleashed another doozy. I may take a poke at it in a bit here.
But there's no need to wait; Learned Foot tore Keillor's latest Strib column apart pretty convincingly.

That was righteous. (Oh! I sound like a right-wing religious nut!)
Posted by: Kermit at June 13, 2006 07:31 AMWhy does ol' Garri always look like he is suffering from a case of inoperable hemorrhoids? I can understand his defence of Nancy (Bela) Pelosi, they look like brother and sister.
Geez, that was sad. Angryclown was all prepared for a clever orifice-tearing. Keillor, while entertaining in small doses and when he's not singing, does seem to be trying to rise above the thing he's good at - writing funny stories about slow-witted Minnesotans.
But his column isn't actually that bad. And his point, of course, is right on. "San Francisco" (also "France") is Republican for "gay." And Pelosi's a lady to boot. Your guys will be all over those two disqualifications for office.
Nothing funnier than seeing wingnuts pretend they're not playing to bigots - sure, that Confederate battle flag is about "heritage."
Posted by: angryclown at June 13, 2006 08:26 AMActually, not to put too fine a point on it... but gay is Republican for gay.
There's nothing funnier than seeing an unhinged lefty trip all over himself trying to prop up the old right = hate nonsense. (Especially coming from such an even-tempered and non-angry guy.)
Posted by: badda-blogger at June 13, 2006 08:54 AMHeehee, yeah "nonsense." Break 10% of the African-American vote someday. Oh and maybe don't crap yourself when somebody sings the national anthem in Spanish.
Posted by: angryclown at June 13, 2006 09:08 AM" "San Francisco" (also "France") is Republican for "gay." "
No, it's Republican for "everything that's wrong with liberalism". Try to stay with us, here.
"don't crap yourself when somebody sings the national anthem in Spanish"
Speaking of which, how y'all coming with those campus speech codes?
"Break 10% of the African-American vote someday"
I think it was 12% in the last election. But that has little to do with "hate". And it's irrelevant - hispanics who've been citizens for 2+ generations are already voting majority-GOP.
As to "heritage" - I love it when New Yorkers yip about slavery. But that's another whole post.

Who, Angryclown? Against 'em. I guess when you spend your day shilling for your team, you start to think everybody does the same.

Slavery: also against.
Posted by: angryclown at June 13, 2006 09:28 AMI don't think Bush is a bigot. But it's pretty clear from the nonsense over the immigration bill tht he needs the support of the people in his party who are.

No Kermit, you sound like an aging Minnesotan attempting to stay relevant by using what you believe are contemporary expressions.
I hate to break it to you but "righteous" was so 1985 and was usually followed by "dude" and it was used by guys that usually smoked way too much pot in the parking lot between classes.
Which reminds me, I haven't seen Swiftee around here for a while...
Carry on.
Posted by: Doug at June 13, 2006 09:42 AMThe appeal of Garrison Keillor's radio show is totally lost on me; his voice should be played over loudspeakers on Hennepin Avenue to keep young people from loitering there, kind of like classical music is used in Edina now.
His weekly column in the Star Tribune is another matter. He's a great writer when he's not taking swings at the Bush administration. When he does go on a political rant, his writing quality drops down several notches - as is true with most people who write about politics. Playing offense via the written word without coming across as a lightweight reactionary is the stuff of high art, and requires huge talent to pull off - and Keillor's not that good.
But catch him writing about non-political matters and he's a most engaging read.
Posted by: PaulC at June 13, 2006 09:49 AMI love the part where Keillor accuses others of talking through their noses. This from a man who talks through his nose, and breaths through his mouth. LOUDLY. Into the microphone.

As Kermit likes to point out on a regulas basis, I work retail (for a couple more months at least) and we have Mexican couple who cleans our bathrooms, breakroom and aisle floors. They speak Spanish when they talk to each other but also speak English pretty well. One of my co-workers who is of the another persuasion, you know - white Republican Christian, filed a complaint with my manager about them speaking Spanish in the presence of co-workers and customers. I guess it made her uncomfortable... She actually told me she thought it was fine if they spoke Spanish to each other in private - just not around "us".
In response, several of my co-workers who are bi-lingual started conversing in Spanish whenever they are around her. They also speak to the cleaning crew in Spanish and the couple responds in English. It's pretty funny.
I've noticed this particular co-worker has started taking breaks and lunch in her car.

Oh yeah, what's up with that? All that on-air breathing drives me nuts.
Posted by: angryclown at June 13, 2006 10:34 AMCome on, Doug. How's she supposed to know if she's being sexually harrassed? They could be telling off-color jokes or commenting on her chi-chis.
Posted by: Kermit at June 13, 2006 10:41 AMAnd I haven't mentioned you job for a long time. It's more fun to point out your affiliation with radical political orgs.
"They also speak to the cleaning crew in Spanish and the couple responds in English. It's pretty funny."
Well, at least you have SOMEthing to occupy your time!
"I've noticed this particular co-worker has started taking breaks and lunch in her car."
Tolerance in action!
I like trying to resuscitate my rudimentary, high school Spanish by trying to speak it with the cleaning guy and the people in the cafeteria. It's fun - and I don't think anyone really, truly has an education if they can't get around in at least one other language.
But what's REALLY fun is when you are talking with some alpaca-wearing, MPR-listening type who will wrap their whole mouth around Spanish pronunciation - "SHEE-lay" and "Nee-ha-RAW-whah" and "MAY-hee-ko" - but then refer to "Bur-LIN" and "MOSS-cow" and "WAR-saw" and "BOO-duh-pest" and "AM-ster-dam" and "MYOO-nik" and "COE-pen-hay-gen" - pfffft.
Coming at them with "Bear-LEEN" and "MOS-kvah" and "Var-SHAW-vah" and "Boo-da-PESH-tee" and "OM-shter-domm" and "MUEN-chyen" and "co-ben-HOV-en" is a kick; it's fun watching their delusions of cultural literacy get cracked.
Especially if it humiliates them and makes them eat their lunch in the car. Because there's nothing so fun as 'winning' a cultural argument in a way that humiliates people, right' Doug?
Or only if it's "white Christian Republicans", I suppose?

Oh... and I might even pick up some mole killer smoke bombs while I'm there...
Better watch out Kermit. I'm armed with manure and I'm not afraid to spread it.
Posted by: Doug at June 13, 2006 11:22 AMI'm with you on the NPR Spanish pronunciations, Mitch. But Doug's coworker went and *told on* the people who clean the bathroom for speaking Spanish. Just the kind of errant busybodyism you wouldn't tolerate from the other side. Let's say Doug filed a complaint cause a coworker praying in the break-room made him feel "uncomfortable"? It isn't about "tolerance" on either side. It's about workers taking sides against an obnoxious coworker - the most natural thing in the world. I suspect if you think about it a little longer, you'll agree.

Ummm Mitch...? No one is forcing her to eat lunch in the parking lot...
Interesting that you clearly side with the poor victim who is being persecuted by having to listen to a foreign language - in the work place no less - considering you are the biggest freeom of speach defender that you know...
Posted by: Doug at June 13, 2006 11:33 AMuh oh... better fix this before Mitch calls out the typo police... speech not speach...

You never have been, Doug.
Posted by: Kermit at June 13, 2006 11:49 AMAccording to the Angry Clown, Republicans disqualify a candidate who is women.
Let's see how that works in Minnesota....
On the GOP side, we have the following: Carol Molnau, Republican Lt. Governor. Mary Kiffmeyer, Republican SOS. Pat Anderson, Republican State Auditor. Michelle Bachmann, Republican endorsed candidate for 6 CD. No disqualifications here.
On the DFL side, we have the following: Becky Lourey, not once but twice rejected by the DFL in her race for governor. Judy Dutcher had the same experience. Plenty of disqualifications there.
The inconvenient truth is that the GOP regularly qualifies women for higher office at the State Capitol while the DFL regularly DISqualifies women for higher office at the State Capitol.

Wait. Did I just suggest that AC was irrelevant?
Well, if that didn't then this will:

I wouldn't tolerate it from MY side, either. Hence my listing of bonafides; I don't tolerate xenophobia well at all.
I'd have probably bagged on the co-worker, too.
I was reacting, I guess, to Doug's calling out of the "White, Christian Conservative" bit. Because goodness knows blue-collar Hispanics, Jamacians and Arabs are NEVER xenophobic...
Posted by: mitch at June 13, 2006 03:09 PMBlue collar folks are almost exclusively xenophobic... just imagine a blue collar Arab Muslim working in a union in New York.

and...? She's a White Christian Conservative.
The only people that I personally know that are convinced that Mexicans are trying to subvert the American way of life by speaking Spanish are White Christian Conservatives.
I'm sorry but stereotypes don't originate in the vacuum of space.
Posted by: Doug at June 13, 2006 07:55 PMBut apparently you do... you gotta get out more, Doug.
I think it's one part not knowing enough white Christian conservatives (note the case), and not knowing enough pro-Spanish language in America folks.
That, and knowing fewer lefties.
Posted by: badda-blogger at June 13, 2006 08:27 PMThat's funny, Doug, the only people I know who believe that white, Christian conservatives are trying to subvert the American way of life by being anti-illegal immigration are atheist devotees of folk Marxism.

Attend a union local meeeting sometime. Be swarthy and speak Spanish for full effect.
"I'm sorry but stereotypes don't originate in the vacuum of space."
It takes a bigot.
Posted by: mitch at June 14, 2006 07:01 AMAnd as Doug has proved repeatedly, Nature abhors a vacuum.
Posted by: Kermit at June 14, 2006 07:28 AMYou're thinking of dogs, Kerm. Dogs hate vacuums.
Posted by: angryclown at June 14, 2006 08:08 AMThat's interesting Terry. I don't know anyone who believes that white, Christian conservatives are trying to subvert the American way of life by being anti-illegal immigration.
And I'm a crazy athiest devotee of folk music and Marx Brothers films.
Posted by: Doug at June 14, 2006 10:09 AMAnd Mitch, I would bet dollars to doughnuts that if I did attend a union meeting, most would identify themselves and being Christian AND Conservative. And as we learned in the last election, there are more union members who identify themselves an Republican and independent - not Democrats.
You guys have done such a great job of demonizing and framing the word "liberal" that very few people I know describe themselves as such - even when they espouse traditionally liberal qualities.
That's just the wave we're riding right now.
For the record, I do a bit of campaigning with union members. The primary issue with them in regard to immigration is job security. I think most understand their jobs are more threatened by NAFTA and CAFTA than by Enrique and Maria crossing the border in Arizona.
