Free Speech: Get The Lead Out

Doug has the news on a very important bill:

I just got off the phone with Rep. Mark Kennedy's office regarding H. R. 1606, a bill he is co-sponsoring and which should be of great interest to bloggers of all political affiliations. The bill is intended:

To amend the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 to exclude communications over the Internet from the definition of public communication.

Near as I can tell (I have some research left to do), this is intended as at very least a step in the direction of freeing political bloggers from the prospect of federal regulation under the aegis of McCain-Feingold.

My note to my representative:

Rep. McCollum,

I would like to urge you to vote *for* H. R. 1606, which would exempt the alternate media - especially bloggers - from the restrictions of the McCain-Feingold speech rationing law.

I am watching this very, very closely.

Please contact your representatives; the vote should happen by this evening.
