The last time I saw this vid, it was 4AM on a lonely Sunday morning watching "Night Trax" on WTBS, in probably 1984.
I still don't know what it means, but I still love it.

It makes perfect sense to me: they've made a video of my last drive to Keegan's with the Mall Diva, Tiger Lilly, Princess Flickerfeather and Bonita.
How they managed to do this in 1984, however, is weird.

What's to figure out? There are like 19 or 20 words to the whole song, which if I am translating correctly are: "Hey lad! Where're you going with that UB40 in your hands? I'm going down to Liverpool to do nothing."
A UB40 is a form in Britain in the 80's that you filled out for unemployment benefits. There were probably a lot of those filled out in the early 80's.
Once you get your benefits, if you're young and unattached, you move to a happening town where you can live cheaply and party late. Minneapolis was your choice, but I think Liverpool fits the bill if you're British.
I doubt Spock is unemployed, nor would he be referred to as "Hey lad!". Maybe the girls were saying "Hey dad!", or maybe they didn't understand the song either.
It's a cover of a Katrina and the Waves song (which was much better, although I like the Bangles version too). The Waves (not Katrina) were form the UK, and the band formed there, hence the UB40 reference.
See how an encyclopedic knowledge of rock can hamper your understanding? I wasn't paying attention to MTV in 1984, and couldn't identify the Bangles in a line-up. I found the singing difficult to understand and so assumed it was a British girl band. After that, everything falls into place.

By way of apology, here's a link to Leonard Nimoy's other music video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Z2HQ1K7YyQM
Posted by: Knowledge Worker at October 19, 2006 12:48 PMLet's be clear here - I know what a UB40 is, know that it's a Katrina cover (with former Soft Boy Kim Rew on guitar), etc.
Just wondering about the vid; Nimoy seems to be a strange afterthought. I guess there's a reason Tamar Simon-Hoffs is an unknown director...
Posted by: mitch at October 19, 2006 08:11 PMThat Susanna Hoffs is a hottie, but what's with that look-left-blink-look right thing? A neurological condition maybe?
Hey Mitch, do you look any more convincing on your 10 instruments than these chicks do?
Posted by: angryclown at October 20, 2006 08:12 AMReminds me of the Monkees "Pleasant Valley Sunday."
Has anyone heard Leonard Nimoy singing, "If I had a Hammer?" It was on a "Golden Throats album years ago. Heh.

Not the pennywhistle. Otherwise, yes.
Vicky Peterson is actually a decent guitar player, and Mikki Steele is a good bass player.
Can't speak re neurological conditions, but I had a backstage pass to a Bangles gig in '86. I think the bass player dug me.
No, really.
Posted by: mitch at October 20, 2006 03:21 PMI never had backstage passes to the Bangles, but I did storm the Roches' dressing room one time. I think they dug each other.
No, really.
