Geek Question

Let's talk audio recording software.

Obviously, the cream of the crop for recording for Windows is Adobe Audition (post-purchase heir to Cool Edit), which gives exceptionally powerful multi-track recording, editing, and special effects capabilities on the Windows platform.

Mac is awash in good recording software, of course.

OK - what do people use to do good multitrack recording, editing and processing on Linux?

Leave suggestions in the comments, please.

The closest thing I can think of for Linux would be Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) - which isn't nearly as powerful as Audition, but it seems to get the job done.

Mitch,

For general purpose work, Audacity is probably the most common application. Ardour is a newer entry on the block, which aims to be the "ProTools" of Linux.

There's a pretty thorough review of some of the main players (Ardour, Audacity, etc.) here (http://arstechnica.com/guides/tweaks/linux-audio.ars) if you'd like to explore further.

Be well,

A second vote for audacity. It's been enough for whatever I've tried to do, but I'm not that into audio processing, video being my thing.
