The Memphis Flyer reports on yet another mainstream media problem; they have little traction with young people:
Newspapers have to deal somehow with the loss of young readers. A former colleague, Rheta Grimsley Johnson, told me she spoke recently to college students interested in writing careers. She could understand them not knowing about Ernie Pyle and Mike Royko. But they'd never heard of Maureen Dowd, either. In a fair and just world, the question itself would have been absurd. Now that MoDo is shopping for men down under we may not hear much from her either for a while. I doubt we'll be kucky enough to lose her to an Australian, they are nuts, but no man is that crazy.
Posted by: Tracy at March 2, 2006 12:22 PMThe reason kids don't know who Maureen Dowd is that kids, like most of their parents, are stupid.
Posted by: angryclown at March 2, 2006 02:48 PMAnd that Mo Dowd is devoid of worth.
Posted by: mitch at March 2, 2006 04:10 PMHave kids ever been interested in the newspaper outside of the comics?
Posted by: Ken at March 2, 2006 04:45 PMAngryclown would not go as far as Mitch on MoDo, but he's no fan.
Posted by: angryclown at March 2, 2006 06:38 PMSee, comparitively Sean Hannity is a charmer, and boy it sure is nice to see scatalogically correct Mitch doesn't make extreme statements, like "is of no worth."
MoDo is a bit strident, but I'm sure Limbaugh or O'Rielley or Bill Kristoll aren't, neither is Bill Buckley or Will Safire. I put Safire and Dowd in the same camp, decent writers, somewhat biased, but tollerable. See the thing is, part of being human, is admitting your side has its own warts, but I don't limit mine to the likes of Louis Farakhan (whom I hardly think of as on "my side").
Mitch, do you concur that William Kristol is strident and, by your standards, "of no worth"?
