As many noted yesterday, Chris Krok is apparently gone at KSTP.
12 years to the month after everyone predicted he'd be gone.
In the winter of '04-'05, after Krok got into a controversial on-air argument with the relatives of someone who'd died in a car crash which aroused (sources say) the ire of station owner Giny Morris, the rumors were that Krok was on short time. Many sources - including some of his co-workers at KSTP - believe that the station would whack Krok, whose contract was reportedly up in late January or early February and whose ratings were poor at best. Around the time of the January 2005 MOB party, the gossip was that Krok was going to become a purse.
Instead, the station fired Krok's producer and gave the host another year.
It didn't work; by some accounts (I'm not looking at an Arbitron book at the moment) Krok's numbers dropped below the vanishing point.
And - glorioski! - Krok's contract is almost up, and he's on his way.
Happy landings, Krok.

I almost feel sorry for Krok... he was clearly out of his league. Whoever hired him REALLY overestimated his abilities.
I remember the first night when Mischke interviewed him at the end of his show leading into the first Krok show... whoa! He was totally screwing with him. lol
Posted by: badda-blogger at January 13, 2006 08:31 AMAre Willie's new side kicks "permanent:*? Willie makes Ian Punnent sound like Tom Bernard. Additionally, I like Bob Davis, but I'm still convinced that he's a bit too strange for morning drive. He was better when he did evenings. Mischke? Late nights or overnight.
*As we know that Willie's days are numbered.
Posted by: mark at January 13, 2006 12:14 PMJesse Ventura isn't doing anything these days, and he does like doing radio...
Posted by: Kermit at January 13, 2006 12:16 PMI was one of the few people that enjoyed listening to Chris' show. I felt as though Krok had a good resonance with the younger, urban conservative voice unlike the other voice talents at KSTP.
I'll miss Krok and if he gets hired again, I'll tune in to whatever station he gets hired at.
Meantime, I'm going to listen to KTLK. KSTP is starting to go downhill.
Former Krok caller, Lee from South Minneapolis.
Posted by: Lee from South Minny at January 13, 2006 02:56 PMGood riddance. Not since the days of Wesley "Weasel" Crusher have I loathed someone in the entertainment industry.
Posted by: Thorley Winston at January 13, 2006 04:46 PM"Wesley Crusher"?!?!?!
Really? Will Weaton can only take so much of the blame when some of the writers and the creator (mega-socialist Gene Roddenbery) made him so lame.
Krok can only blame himself.

Aside from poor delivery, continuous repition (verbatim), and sloppy manner he's also (apparently) a jackass to work with.
Posted by: badda-blogger at January 13, 2006 06:15 PMThe problem for KSTP, in my opinion, is that it is feeling the tremendous gravitational pull to emphasize "personality" instead of ideas. This makes for DULL radio: Krok was many things on the air but never once was he interesting. Willie Clark is just radio example of tedious self regard mouthing ignorant opinions -- e.g. As I heard last week, "We need to get rid of the Electoral College. Its pointless." How about Ron Rosenbaum? He has become a human playlist of reflexive cliches. Successful radio (like NARN)is about focusing on ideas -- KSTP is losing its success precisely in proportion to its willingness to stop talking about ideas.
Posted by: okp at January 13, 2006 06:47 PMThank God. We are finally going to stop hearing him mention his buddy the St. Paul cop who died in Iraq.
Kroc was a joke.
Posted by: Doug at January 13, 2006 07:15 PMGlad he's gone. I was driving home from work about 9:30 p.m. and flipping around to various stations. I heard him say it was his last show so I stayed to the end. Kept on saying "love ya man" (gag). A caller mentioned the Rolling Stones and this prompted Krok to hint that his new station got him skybox tickets to a Stones show before he would officially start his new job. Looking at their tour schedule, this means Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, New York, Omaha or St Louis. They also have three shows in South America - I hope that's where he's going.
Posted by: Don at January 13, 2006 08:02 PMPersonality is good... and the level of ideas must match the personality.
I like Dave Thompson... and he's got great ideas, he's quite articulate, he's clever and engaging... but he's not the most riviting on a consistent basis. At least not for typical listeners.
Krok had an abundance of personality... all of it lame.
Posted by: badda-blogger at January 14, 2006 12:39 AMHey badda! I agree. Thompson is like Jason Lewis lite. The man needs to develop some mean.
Posted by: Kermit at January 14, 2006 09:16 AMKermit,
Yeah, but not necessarily mean. Dave will go after some topics with great enthusiasm, much like Minnesota's Mr. Right... but not nearly as often, it seems.
Every now and then I tune into Lewis via the web... just to get a taste. ;)
Posted by: badda-blogger at January 14, 2006 11:56 AMhe wasn't there yet, but could be some day. I was a friend of his, didn't always agree with him. Liked that he did alot to get to know the area. he did alot of live remotes; something that the other "talent" on kstp wasn't into. he rallied for smokers, went to north mpls on nat't night out.
Posted by: aquaman at January 14, 2006 10:19 PMBob Davis needs to be on mornings and Mishke at night. Feed Rosen"Bomb" to the Limbaugh "great white shark"
The only time I saw Kroc in person was at the KSTP-sponsored Hannity thing at St. Kate's, and he made an ass of himself. He laughed just a little louder than anyone else on stage, slapped his knee in hilarity whenever another host said anything remotely funny, interupted others to tell his own stories and nodded his head in agreement like a cymbal-banging monkey puppet. He acted like the new kid in town who moved in during junior high and tried too hard to become popular. He either eventually fit in, or was ostracized because he was a dork. I also heard him the night he pissed off the accident victim's family. There is a fine line between being controversial and being a dink. I don't think he ever learned that.
Posted by: Lori at January 16, 2006 01:52 PMI won't miss him at all. I just started listening to Jack FM during his show.
I know KSTP is going thru a rough patch. It's the only AM station I can get in my certain little corner of my building at work, if I put my radio on my file cabinet at just the right angle. And our IT geeks have fire-walled my web-streaming. Grrrr. I can get The Patriot in my garage consistently, in my kitchen sporadically and in the car when the wind blows just right. But as a news junkie and one who needs white noise on to get anything done in my life, I'll keep listening until someone truly repulsive comes back, like Tury Ryder. (Sp?) And of course, I read the blogs.
I saw a rumor on a radio blog that Krok's going to end up in Atlanta. The Stones are playing there on Feb. 3, which fits the timeline and his comment about getting skybox tickets.
I was hoping for Omaha, but I don't think they have skyboxes there. Chicago is another possibility.
I do think he has an offer. But good riddance anyhow.
Posted by: George at January 18, 2006 10:53 AMKrok was a crock. If his ratings were as low as I hear they were, why would a larger market hire him, and why would he keep where he was going a secret from the station? His shows were horrible and only got worse as time went on. I suspect he was let go, but am glad he is off the air regardless...
Posted by: Kdub at January 20, 2006 10:12 PMListening to that asshole krok was like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard!
Posted by: Eric at January 27, 2006 08:19 PMI used to think Kroc was bad, until I heard Willie Clark. What the hell are they thinking over there?
