Wouldja Believe...?

Just the other day, I was thinking about the '87 World Series, and wondering whatever happened to various members of the team - including Jeff Reardon.

Sorry I asked:

Former major league pitcher Jeff Reardon was arrested Monday on charges he robbed a jewelry store.

Reardon, 50, walked into Hamilton Jewelers at the Gardens Mall about 11:50 a.m. Monday and handed an employee a note that said he had a gun and the store was being robbed, according to the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department.

Reardon fled the store with an undisclosed amount of cash. Police found him at a nearby restaurant, recovered the stolen money and charged him with armed robbery.

That's going to hurt his Earned Robbery Average.

Bummer.

According to an AP article today, "He [Reardon's atty] said Reardon had a 20-year-old son who died of a drug overdose in February 2004, which "has been very difficult for him and his family,'' and has been on medication for depression. Reardon, who is married and has two other children, also underwent a heart angioplasty last week and has been taking medication for that.

Sad, but how does that drive one to commit armed robbery?

Yeah, you'd think with all those troubles on his plate, armed robbery would be the last thing he'd need. It amazes me how some people's minds work. I guess I'm too lazy to screw up my life in such imaginative ways.

Actually, I think it sounds like he needs God in his life more than anything.

On the wall of my office in my home is a framed negative of the front page of the Pioneer Press. It is the front page of the October 26, 1987 edition, the day after the Twins won the Series. In the lower left corner? A picture of then Pioneer Press columnist NICK COLEMAN, opining on the fans' impact in the series.

I'm not going to pull a "PB" and go off on a tangent. Just thought it was interesting.

The guy made about 12 million in his career, is eligible for a very generous pension, and by all accounts does not live extravagantly or have a gambling problem. I suspect he is at the end of his figurative rope, and is desperately flailing about, trying to not end up on the end of a literal one he has looped around his neck. People in this state of mind are not rational, and it is pointless to expect rational behavior. Hopefully, he did not actually have a weapon, and thus the prosecutor will have some leeway in dealing with this; it sounds as if he wanted to get caught.
