Has Minnesota Democrats Exposed caught DFL Goober hopeful Steve Kelley using state resources in his gubernatorial campaign?
Earlier today, I received an official Steve Kelley for Governor press release from one of my numerous DFL sources. I reviewed the document properties of the attached Word file and discovered the press release was prepared with a copy of Word from the Minnesota Senate. If true, it'd be ironic, as MDE goes on to note:
Last year DFL State Senator John Hottinger filed an ethics complaint against a Republican Senator for using a state computer to send out an campaign email. When will people discover PDF? So much easier to sanitize... Posted by Mitch at November 28, 2005 06:59 PM | TrackBackHottinger was quoted by the Associated Press as saying: "The strict separation of campaigning from our responsibilities of governing must be upheld in order to keep the public's trust."
If I work in Word, then convert to WordPervert, what does the "properties" field say?
How about in the reverse?
.
Posted by: nathan bissonette at November 28, 2005 03:47 PMThose properties are proprietary for MS Word; if you converted to WordPerfect they would almost certainly be dropped. Microsoft actually has a pretty extensive document architecture.
Posted by: Bill Haverberg at November 28, 2005 06:54 PMI don't know whether to be greatful or embarassed at what apparently constitutes a "scandal" in Minnesota politics.
On the one hand, I'm glad we have a mostly clean government compared to many other States (e.g. Massachusetts, New York). On the other, it's a little sickening to watch our pols act like a bunch of primary school children racing to tattle to teacher on who it was that forgot to put the cap on the paste.

Thank you. Absolutely correct.
Posted by: Craig Westover at November 29, 2005 11:08 AMThorley,
I'm inclined to agree. But politics is local - and local people can be real dicks.
Posted by: mitch at November 29, 2005 11:27 AMIt may be small stuff (using State Capitol computers for purely political purposes), but it was the DLF that started this war with its ethical complaint last time. Senate Minority Leader Dick Day, if he had any clarity of thought and any gumption, should be filing a complaint about this one. But don't hold your breath. Hottinger on Prozac has more clarity of thought and way more gumption than Day on, how can I say this, a good day.
Posted by: Larry at November 29, 2005 04:07 PMThe Kelley campaign has responded to this claim. They say that a volunteer created the newsrelease from a template from the Senate.
I am on the Kelley Press List - and I received the press release. I looked at the properties and verified that MDE had that part of the story right. I also looked at the originating ip, and did an ip lookup. The email did not come from state computers.
This contrasts to the case where Dump Bachmann reported on an instance when Michele Bachmann's former campaign manager, Brad Biers used a state computer to send a Michele Bachmann press release created on Senate Computers. The report, plus screen shots are available here.

Kermit, Lloydletta's Nooz reported on proof that Michael Brodkorb, former communications and research director of the Republican Party of Minnesota is one of the bloggers at Minnesota Democrats Exposed. There might be more than one blogger over there.

Toby from the DFL blog had sent me the tip, with the request that I don't identify my source. After I wrote the post, Toby decided to post about this on his blog:

This got picked up by the National Journal Hotline:
