The Old "Invisible Platform" Trick!

Driving home last night, heard Mayor-elect Coleman talking on MPR:

"This campaign never was about George Bush"
Followed, inevitably, by about forty seconds of:
Bush lies bla bla Bush/Pawlenty plan to gut cities bla bla bla Bush bla bla bla radical right bla bla
And so on.

Note to Coleman, his supporters, and the entire world: Yes, it was.

(Swiftee noticed it too)

Note to Mayor-elect Coleman: You're going to need to come up with a whooooole lot more than "I didn't endorse Bush!" and "I'm going to listen and cooperate...".

By the way, who were those gerbils serving as "anlalysts" on MPR last night? Worst. Analysis. Ever.

Wow, I'm STUNNED that you wouldn't like Coleman.. gosh..

I agree with you that the election in St. Paul was about Bush... Kelly made it so. Coleman may have tried to talk about more than Bush, but the citizens didn't much care. Kelly unelected himself, and no amount of Coleman OR YOUR spin, will change that fact.

Coleman tried to talk about other things, I heard him enough to have heard it. Your post (in the typical right-wing distortion mode) implies that Coleman made the campaign solely about Bush. Perhaps you didn't mean to imply that, if not, say so.

If you did mean to imply it, then it's just another of your BS posts. Coleman certainly did talk about it, he should have, it indicated just what a chameleon Kelly became, but Coleman also talked about things like the Governor's cut to local government aid - and the fact that non-discretionary increases in state budgets meant that discretionary funding FELL, not rose, despite Pawlenty's misleading (gosh, a trend seems to be showing up) statements that he didn't cut government, he merely slowed it's growth.. Truth of course is, he didn't slow anything he couldn't affect and he DID cut that which he could. Coleman talked about that.

I guess though I shouldn't be surprised to see a right wing blog misrepresent reality. Coleman DID come up with a whole lot more than "I didn't endorse Bush" and candidly, given the angry, bellicous nature of Bush (who promised cooperation and gave us totalitarianism) a little cooperation and civility would be welcome right about now. Eqauting Coleman's spin comment about what the campaign was or wasn't about with Coleman MAKING the campaign about nothing other than that, is false. Would you care to try again?

Did you see that part of the article where it said that Coleman's cell phone hung up on John Kerry?

There needs to be some sort of investigation, preferably in the form of a fifteen paragraph long post by PB informing us about how the phone company gave millions of dollars to the Bush-Cheney campaign, and deliberately cut off phone services to New Orleans during Katrina so that poor black cell phone users would be unable to call for help.

By throwing over a Good, qualified mayor with a proven track record in favor of an empty suit, party hack, the DFL rank and file have shown
A) They are mean-spirited and vindictive
and
B) Not terribly bright
Good luck, St. Paul

Posted by: Kermit at November 9, 2005 08:03 AM

After reading the words "YOUR SPIN" in PB's post, I'm dizzy from the rotational acrobatics that follow. I especially love the "promised cooperation, delivered totalitarianism" line. That's quite creative.

I dunno, I guess I haven't felt the need anytime in the recent past, to stand up and give the Seig Heil salute to Fuhrer Bush's portrait that isn't hanging on my living room wall

"Pot, kettle on line 1..."

Wow. The Left wins a few meaningless elections and they are getting chippy. You go girlfriend.

Oh, there was Republican NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg pummeling Fernando Ferrer by a 20-point margin, the largest of any Republican over a Democrat in a New York mayoral race. That should have the Dems worried that a Repub can carry Lefty Central. Picture '08 when Rudolph Giuliani's carries NY along with Fly Over Country. Can you say M-A-N-D-A-T-E?

Posted by: mrcheerordie at November 9, 2005 08:54 AM

Perhaps Coleman didn't make it about Bush, but the DFL did. MPR said so this morning, so it must be true.
I just heard a clip of Coleman's acceptance speech. By sheer coincidence I have lost my will to live.
Kelly's welcome in our tent anytime.

Posted by: chriss at November 9, 2005 08:57 AM

Oh, and PB: Chameleons change positions to gain popularity. The mayor of uber-liberal St. Paul hardly scores points by endorsing Bush.
Is there a connection between left wing ideology and the complete inability to know the difference between "it's" and "its?" A bit off point, but just something I have been wondering about, appropos nothing.

Posted by: chriss at November 9, 2005 09:03 AM

Chriss: Confusing the contractive and possessive forms of "it" can trip writers of any ideological faction, but only conservatives flub the spelling of "apropos" because their loosers! Opps.

"Wow. The Left wins a few meaningless elections and they are getting chippy. You go girlfriend."

GOP election tip #57. Minimize and marginalize opposition gains in an effort to "appear" less vulnerable.

...and check.

Hey guys, seriously, this was entirely about Bush. It is about the citizens of St. Paul overwhelmingly rejecting anything that has ties with the trainwreck that is Bush's foreign and domestic policy.

It's just too bad Mr. Bush didn't fly in for a last minute campaign rally for Bloomberg.

Warm up them pens for the up and coming residental St. Paul income tax on top of a spiraling property tax raise.....

...and remember its for the children....

Glad I live in Washington county now.....and do not work or shop in St. Paul anymore...

...all for the useless gesture of endorsing Bush, the ship of St. Paul will sink into the abyss of Jay Benanav and company....

Posted by: Greg at November 9, 2005 09:56 AM

"the trainwreck that is Bush's foreign and domestic policy."
Elections in Afghanistan and Iraq
25 million people freed from tyranny
Libya surrenders WMD program
Syria out of Lebanon
Egypt holds multy-party elections for first time
Huge natural disaster met - gas prices drop $1 a gallon in less than three months
4% growth in GDP sustained
Lowest unemployment figures in twenty five years
Inflation completely under control

That's some trainwreck.

Posted by: Kermit at November 9, 2005 10:05 AM

Hoisted by my own grammatical petard! Thanks, Ernst.
I do, however, agree with Kermit: I'll Bush's 'trainwreck' will go down in history as one of the truly great presidencies. Lincoln wasn't real popular at the time either.

Posted by: chriss at November 9, 2005 10:48 AM

Kermit,

All they need to see is anything regarding evangelical and/or pro-life gains, and it's a trainwreck. Roberts and Alito are equivalent to the Titanic. Hopefully Bush goes 3 for 3 if there is another SCOTUS vacancy, and puts up JRB. "Titanic" would become "Hiroshima".

No matter what happens, as long as BUSH (BushCo, Chimpy McBushitler, etc) is behind it, it's a trainwreck to them.

I say full steam ahead, warp factor 9, balls to the wall.

Posted by: Bill C at November 9, 2005 10:50 AM

I should say foiled by Bill Gates: Before using it in my comment I typed 'appropos' into Word and it was automatically corrected it and dropped my added p without me realizing it. Damn that Microsoft!

Posted by: chriss at November 9, 2005 10:50 AM

"Elections in Afghanistan and Iraq"

With reports of wide spread fraud in both countries... I assume you support the idea that the ends justify the means right?

"25 million people freed from tyranny"

WHAT?!? Did Bush resign today?

"Libya surrenders WMD program"

Hmmmm... Libya has had severe restrictions against it since Bush's dad was VP. Libya abandons it's WMD programs and get to play with the rest of the world. I'll expect to see your formal thank you letter to President Rutherford B. Hayes for freeing the slaves.

"Syria out of Lebanon"

Thank you UN.

"Egypt holds multy-party elections for first time"

In other news, a 45 metre asteroid named 2000 AY came within 480,000 kilometers of slamming into Earth. Assistant White House spokesperson, Kermit says this is the clearest signal yet that the Bush stance against space based WMD programs is working.

"Huge natural disaster met - gas prices drop $1 a gallon in less than three months"

Gosh! and we didn't even have to drill in ANWAR! Wow.

"4% growth in GDP sustained"

The wealthiest 2 percent can determine GDP for the entire country. That's not an indication of the how the rest of us are doing.

"Lowest unemployment figures in twenty five years"

Once persons have exhaused benefits, they are no longer accounted for in the unemployment figures. Also, check the re-employment income rates. They're down which means people are making LESS than they were before they lost their last job. Also, check forclosure rates, bankruptcy filings and the level of uninsured.

"Inflation completely under control"

Deficits, debt and trade imbalance completely out of control. Google "cause and effect" Kermit.

I'm sure that Coleman (Nick) will engage in hyper-smug mode with the mistaken theory that a vote for Coleman (Chris) is a vote for Coleman (Nick).

He might also then assume that a vote for Coleman (Chris) is a vote for Coleman/newspaper journalistm is a vote against blog/internet journalism.

So according to Doug and PB, we're living in a totalitarian country and an economic wasteland. Dang. Nobody ever tells me anything. I have to read such informed, brilliant analysis here. I feel so left out. Which way to the concentration camp? Can I keep my pet pig?

Posted by: Eracus at November 9, 2005 11:34 AM

"With reports of wide spread fraud in both countries... I assume you support the idea that the ends justify the means right?"

Oh, puh-leeeze. With all due respect, Doug, that's the dumbest objection I've ever heard. So reports of fraud (unconfirmed, at that) that are, by any rational measure, vastly below that normally endemic in most facets of comparable regional societies, invalidate the whole process of democratization? Wow - I guess Milwaukee and New Jersey are REAL quagmires.

"WHAT?!? Did Bush resign today?"

Again, with all due respect, a statement so crushingly trite that it doesn't deserve a response.

"Hmmmm... Libya has had severe restrictions against it since Bush's dad was VP. Libya abandons it's WMD programs and get to play with the rest of the world."

A statement that betrays either massive ignorance, or an assumption that the rest of us are crushingly ignorant. Libya's been sanctioned for decades. The world played with them just fine anyway - the sanctions were worthless. Europe imported enough Libyan oil to make Qaddafhi a very wealthy man. It wasn't the sanctions that prompted him to play nice with the rest of the world.

"Thank you UN."

Ah. Again, thirty years of impotent phumphering on the East River suddenly saw fruition - and by an amazing coincidence, it happened the very month of the Iraqi elections? Who knew!

"In other news, a 45 metre asteroid named 2000 AY came within 480,000 kilometers of slamming into Earth. Assistant White House spokesperson, Kermit says this is the clearest signal yet that the Bush stance against space based WMD programs is working."

If this is the best you can do, Doug, then perhaps you should stick to commenting over at Oliver Willis.

"The wealthiest 2 percent can determine GDP for the entire country. That's not an indication of the how the rest of us are doing."

Yes, it is. More of us have jobs, the middle standard of living quintiles keep on rising. Things aren't collapsing, damn the luck!

"Once persons have exhaused benefits, they are no longer accounted for in the unemployment figures."

An interesting statement of fact (possibly - it doesn't sound right), but not necessarilly tied to the unemployment rate in any way. In fact, that seems to be why the rate is holding steady - people returning to the work force.

"Also, check the re-employment income rates. They're down which means people are making LESS than they were before they lost their last job."

Gosh, there's a shock; people change careers under duress, they take a hit. It happens. Then the income rises again. That's how it works.

" Also, check forclosure rates, bankruptcy filings and the level of uninsured. "

Bankruptcy is up because people are filing at record rates to beat the new law's deadline. Level of uninsured is misleading - most of them are younger workers who are voluntarily uninsured. Foreclosure rates are a natural consequence of a housing boom where people get overleveraged. It's a comment on dubious financial practices, not the economy at large.

I know, Doug - you won't be happy until you can pin some catastrophe on Chimpy McBushitler. Good luck with that - at least, outside the echo chamber.

Posted by: mitch at November 9, 2005 11:50 AM

I loved the headlines in the Pioneer Pravda today. It's as if they were shocked, shocked, to see a Democrat beat a Democrat for mayor in St. Paul.

The election had nothing to do with Bush or his policies, per se. It was about punishing an apostate. Kelly failed to toe the DFL party line. Kelly must be punished. Simple as that.

Those of you not living, working, owning property and paying taxes here may not understand this, but it's absolutely key: this is a one-party union town, and that party is the DFL as envisioned by government unions (teachers, AFSCME, etc). That's all you need to know to understand city politics here.
