I was grabbing some stuff for dinner in my local Rainbow Foods last night. Now, it's rare that the music on the overhead Muzak doesn't bore or cringe me, much less irritate. But last night I got lucky (as it were); it played "The Waiting", the 1981 classic by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Petty, of course, is one of those artists who's always been one of my favorites - he's worth a post one of these days - and "The Waiting" and the whole Hard Promises album are among my favorites ever.
Remember when I wrote about "moments" in music a couple of weeks ago? One of my favorites is when Petty wraps up the bridge of "The Waiting":
Oh don't let it kill you baby, don't let it get to you...which instantly resolves up a minor third into one of Mike Campbell's most glorious solos ever.
Don't let it kill you baby, don't let it get to you
I'll be your bleeding heart, I'll be your crying fool
Don't let this go too far
Don't let it get to you...
So as I unloaded my shopping cart, I waited as the bridge rolled along, silently building up to the little jot of ecstasy that little moment has always given me.
"...I'll be your bleeding heart, I'll be your blind fool/Don't let it to too...
POP SCRATCH
"Attention. Tom Jimenez, pick up line fo...no, I'm sorry...heh...Tom Jimenez, pick up line two. Tom Jimenez, line two...thank you...."
I'm shopping at Cub next time.
Not sure why you weren't at Cub anyway. Rainbow has improved greatly since the Roundy take-over. But my brief visits to see how they are doing hasn't put me in a position to switch back, yet.
As for your post. You have to know these guys, in any store, wait for the most inoportune time to break in. Just like wathcing TV and getting to a great part in a show so the Weather man can break in and give you updates so they can cut back in time . . . . for the commercials. Notice they never pre-empt commercials, just the shows

Posted by: Flash at September 27, 2005 10:59 AMThe main reason I go to Rainbow is the Roundy house brand of products. They're inexpensive and mighty good.
I prefer Cub for general shopping - but I've found that the SuperTarget grocery sections clobber both of them for price and, this surprised me, the quality and value of the house brand products, which are top-notch *and* cheaper than comparable brands at either Cub or R'Bow. Downside: the nearest one is in Shoreview. Upside: In a month or so, the Roseville SuperTarg opens. Woo hoo.
Posted by: mitch at September 27, 2005 11:07 AMWal-Mart is where it's at.
It's great, they trash the environment, destroy lame Mom and Pop stores, discriminate again' women, contribute to suburban sprawl and ensure businesses can pay low wages to the proles.
Everything a conservative could want!
Oh, and their stuff IS cheaper!
Posted by: JB Doubtless at September 27, 2005 01:43 PMI have fond memories of shopping for brats and beer at your neighborhood Rainbow Foods store back in 1993 with my cousin. He loved it because it was cheap. A friend of his refused to shop there and called the place "Ghetto Grocery".
I stopped there for munchies at 11 PM on a Thursday night a few weeks ago after partying with the MOB at Keegan's. There were more police cruisers in the parking lot than there were shoppers in the store. Yikes!
I used to think that Minnesota was some kind of cornucopia because my local supermarket's store brand has an Eden Prarie address. It turns out that they are owned by SuperValu, just like Cub. So much for my vision of the heartland.
Posted by: Dave in Pgh. at September 27, 2005 02:58 PMI shop at the local walmart-it replaced the Kmart that was in the same building and am gratified to see all the Somali and other immigrant that have jobs there. Fire them all! We can't have a huge capitalist employing them! They should be struggling and on the dole!
