We're off to observe memorial day today.
We may try to stop by my kids' grandfather's grave, in the northwest 'burbs. My ex father-in-law Al fought in World War II, as a gunner's mate on the USS Collette. I tell his story (and that of his brother, who was killed when his destroyer was torpedoed) in this post from last December.
Then, off to a park to be determined later, for a barbecue. I have to try to get there early enough to find a grill - my old Smokey Joe disappeared a while ago. I should probably just buy another...anyway, I have some steaks and potato salad and all the other goodies, so it'll be a fun picnic, after which I think we'll rent a canoe and take a tour around some local lake or another.
Have a great Memorial Day. I won't nag you to remember what the day's about - I assume most of my readers know this already.

Mitch--You support the Great and Glorious War Against Some Brown People That in No Way Was Trumped Up, right? So why haven't you enlisted yet? Army recruitment is way down. What's your excuse? Go on, Jonah Goldberg gave his (too expensive, he's got a young child, he's fat).
Posted by: Something Polish at May 31, 2005 10:46 PMNot that you've done anything to deserve an answer, but I'm 42 and have two kids.
If I were 25 and single, I think I'd have joined up.
OK - so since you support the Great and Glorious Dictator who was a benevolent teddybear until we trumped up charges and railroaded him into jail; why haven't you converted to Islam and moved to, say, Iraq or Saudi Arabia or Pakistan or Palestine?
Same logic.
Posted by: mitch at June 1, 2005 08:45 AMHey Something Polish--I'm a lonely little man living in his mother's basement who leaves anonymous crank comments on peoples' blogs - from IP address 63.224.14.132 - but I notice that Mitch answers yours, but ignores and ridicules me. I bet it's because you add something to the discussion!
You need to stop that!
Hey, Mitch! You're part of the "101st Screaming Keyboardists!" CHICKENHAWK! CHICKENHAWK!
Posted by: Dump Bachmann at June 1, 2005 09:19 AMSame logic.
Um, no it isn't, silly. I never ever ever supported Sandman Insane (that's what I call him!). But you did, and for some reason still do support, Great and Glorious War Against Some Brown People. See the difference?
I'll grant you one thing, you have a better excuse than the Doughy Pantload, Jonah Goldberg.
Posted by: Something Polish at June 1, 2005 09:27 AMYes, it is. You state the grounds for the war in the most pejorative possible terms - like it's a racist lark that treats Arabs like worthless chattel. For me, it is quite the opposite; "some brown people" are living a lot better now than they were three years ago. Yet you cast the war - and my support of it - as a racist enterprise with no rational motivation, calling it a "war against brown people", a motivation that never crossed MY mind, for one. Hence the "logic" of assuming you, by the same token, support genocidal dictators.
So while I don't necessarily think you DO support dictators, I think it's only fair that your motivations get the same treatment, too. If you want to plead "no, I don't support dictators", quit playing pick-up-stix with other peoples' motivations!
Dumper: I loved that "101st Fighting Keyboardist" line the first time I heard it - TWO YEARS ago, on Daily Kos. And the 40,000 times since then. By the way, getting called a "chickenhawk" loses a little impact coming from an anonymous crank. Just so's ya know.
Posted by: mitch at June 1, 2005 09:46 AMYes, it is.
Is not.
Posted by: Something Polish at June 1, 2005 09:52 AMHm.
And I was starting to think there was grounds for a discussion.
Silly me.
