Quiz for Nick Coleman

Chad the Elder notes something he heard on the Nick Coleman "show" this morning:

He likes to portray himself as a bit of a history buff and was claiming that "wing-nuts" have no regard for history. He was also discussing the Mexican American War which, in his words, was a "an awful war fought in the 1830s."
Nick - quick question for you.

What was the decisive battle of the Mexican-American war?

  1. The Alamo (1836)
  2. San Jacinto (1836)
  3. Goliad (1836)
  4. Mocedades (1836)
Answers in the extended section.

If you answered 1, 2 or 3, you must be a Strib columnist. All three battles were part of the "Texas War of Independence", from 1831-36.

The Mexican-American War was 1846-48.

If you answered 4, you are confused enough to be a Strib columnist, and historically illiterate enough to be a major leftyblogger; Mocedades was not a battle, but rather a Spanish pop singer of the 1960's.

Oh dude.

Please correct the second digit of the actual dates. As I'm sure you know, it was James K. Polk (the best dem president), not Harry S. Truman (probably the second-best dem president), who was CinC at the time.

"an awful war fought in the 1830s":

I presume this was in a typical screed against American (United Statesian?) foreign aggression. (It's a common-enough hobby horse on the left, especially in the Southwest.)

While there is blame available for most parties, I submit that the greatest portion of the blame for that war belongs to Mexico. They had repudiated the peace treaty that gave Texas independence (10 years before, as you note), and threatened war if the US annexed Texas. They unilaterally stopped all governmental contact that might have resolved disputes, and it was Mexican troops that fired the first shots. Oh, and the conventional wisdom was that the US had no chance to beat Mexico.

The biggest problem for the people who "know stuff" seems to be that the US both won and furthered its national interests. Too bad about that.
