Embarassment of Quotation Riches

Luke Francl of New Patriot declared this Coleman bit his "quote of the day" yesterday:

Nick Coleman: "South St. Paul to Tim Pawlenty: You need to win reelection in 2006 or the right wing will dump you faster than a male prostitute who somehow got White House press credentials.
Hm. So that's the quote.

Of the day.

Hm.

Well, in the interest of bringing people together through the universal language of humor, I figured I'd exhume a few other bon mots[1] by the left's favorite funnyman.

"Stillwater to Michele Bachmann; you need to quit acting like a big cheese or your political futures are will be like the girl from Abu Ghraib".

"Saint Paul to David Strom: You'd better quit complaining about taxes, or the next time you come to Archie's barbershop on West Seventh will be like Iran Contra."

"Mendota Heights to the Minnesota Organization of Ba-log-gers: Stop trying to bring down the Strib or your basements will become as smelly as Enron."

Thanks. I"ll be here 'til Tuesday.

It does explain Janeane Garofalo's contnuing popularity.

Mitch,

On the subject of Coleman's column from yesterday.

In his final sentence, he makes a sideways reference to the Taxpayers League as "tax evaders". Not "lobbyists", not "complainers", but "evaders".

Tax evasion is a serious crime that carries with it such outcomes as federal prison time. It is a very specific term. Accusing the Taxpayers League of tax evasion for expressing their views would be like claiming Coleman murdered Ronald Reagan because he didn't hold a high opinion of him. I would assume Nick understands the difference, seeing as he "knows stuff" and all.

What's that term again for someone who publishes something they know to be false with harmful intent?

I caught that, too, Mike. Technically, Nick could be protected by the "parody" shield when it comes to libel, insofar as Nick can be considered "funny" or adept at parody, which I would argue he's neither funny nor adept at parody. Still, if Luke Francl thinks Nick is funny, along with two or three other humor-impaired people who get even a mild *guffaw* from Senor Monkey, he probably can't get nailed for libel. He comes close with the "tax evasion" line, but don't expect any legal action to be taken against him, or the Strib to even offer a correction or apology, for that matter.

I enjoy tearing apart Nick's brain fart columns from time to time, but I can't figure out why the Strib doesn't drop by his desk and start asking for improved quality from that keyboard-mashing loon. He's just a terrible writer, and he's an even worse reporter. Combine the two, and there's no reason on God's green earth why the largest newspaper in Minnesota continues to print his mental nose nuggets. I did better research and writing for book reports in 7th grade, for crying out loud.

Nick uses that moniker to refer to the TPL about 10 times a day on his show. It's the typical liberal tendency to believe that altering someone's name in an insulting and mocking manner (see, e.g. "Lush Rimbaugh" "Assrocket" etc.) is clever and an actual substitute for intelligent argument and advocacy of one's position.

LF,

Thanks for the added info. I count myself amongst the fortunate 99.999% of Minnesotans who do not choose to partake of Coleman's radio gig. A man who volunteers to be associated with Janet Robert has the nerve to question anyone else's judgement?

I'm with you on the grade-school name games. Limbaugh's affection for doing the same thing turned me off to him long ago. That's one of the things I really like about Hewitt's show. He can be informative, entertaining, and funny as hell, while still engaging his audience at an adult level. Mitch - I think I can say the same about the NARN (most of the time anyway!)

I agree to all the other comments made. I am in a state of awe though when I read NC's column. Is there anyone in Minnesota journalism who can so quickly and with such assurance invoke a cliche? I like to read him just to discover where in his piece he will unveil the jaw-dropping cliche. Today's example was a "two-fer" we got both the "Raise Taxes" shibboleth and the much loved "Spend on Education" piety with a small gesture to the "Republicans Only Care about the Wealthy."

This is the kind of thought leadership this state needs.
