THe NYSun's Thomas Lipscomb makes the case that he didn't.
A former officer in the Navy's Judge Advocate General Corps Reserve has built a case that Senator Kerry was other than honorably discharged from the Navy by 1975, The New York Sun has learned. Will the media demand the same transparency about Kerry's military record that has obsessed them about Bush's for the past five years?
Read the article. Pass it on to any voter you know who is still impressed by John Kerry's war record.

I doubt he actually was dishonorably discharged. More likely he simply wasn't given a discharge in 1972 when it was due. Kerry didn't ask for one--unlike Lt Geo. W. Bush in 1973--until 1978, when the political climate was favorable. Jimmy Carter, Ted Kennedy, and possibly John Warner would be the likely candidates behind it.
But the background remains; Kerry violated the UCMJ by meeting with the enemy, and promoting their peace proposal. He actually faced the death penalty, had he been court-martialed and found guilty.
