Save WCAL

Carl Albing, a friend of Shot In The Dark, sends this electronic petition to try to derail the sale of WCAL Radio at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN to Minnesota Public Radio.

I'd like to wish 'em luck. These petition drives work fairly rarely; St. Olaf is selling the station voluntarily, and it'll be a hard case to show that MPR would violate any significant community standards (unless "rampant political bias" is counted, and it's usually not).

But I signed the petition. I hope you will, too.

It's impressive to see the list of Oles standing up to support WCAL -- classmates, professors, previous senior administrators. This is only the latest in President Thomforde's poor decisions. I hope he listens to the many Oles he claims to support.

Hi there.
Don't despair
We have over 4000 signers at www.savewcal.org
direct folks there, and they will see for themselves that this in NOT just a bunch of "save my format" people.

We ARE the arts community, the singers,composers, musicans, AND "those Lutherans". Our weekends are NOT "broken" and we will fight to the last ear to keep them that way.

The analogy was made to Walmart, but unlike MPR, Walmart has to provide an economic base to the very people it put out of business (so that they can afford to buy at Walmart.)MPR has not even done that much. Bill Kling has in his own words inside a month alienated WCAL listeners,Lutherans of all stripes, Christians, music majors (and one chemistry major), and even now HIS OWN PEOPLE. (Saturday Tribune article on save WCAL site)

Thank you for your support.

JOIN THE MPR $0 PLEDGE DRIVE!

Minnesota Public Radio's Fall Pledge Drive lasts from Nov. 5-12, during which funds will be solicited to pay for recent expansions in its radio empire. Join supporters of WCAL 89.3 FM in opposing the pending sale of WCAL by contacting MPR and making the following "pledge:"

"I PLEDGE to donate $0 to Minnesota Public Radio until MPR ceases its efforts to acquire WCAL 89.3 FM and institute a new programming format. In addition, I PLEDGE to encourage my family, friends, neighbors, colleagues and acquaintances to donate $0 to MPR until MPR halts its unwanted efforts to acquire and alter America’s oldest listener-supported radio station. This Pledge Drive will continue until MPR acknowledges that the public owns the airwaves and starts behaving accordingly."

* Call MPR at (800)228-7123 or (651)290-1212 or
* E-mail MPR at mail@mpr.org
