Convention!

Only two years until the '08 GOP Convo in Saint Paul:

When national Republicans came to town, they were feted at the new Walker Art Center, were taken for a cruise on the Mississippi by media mogul Stan Hubbard, vice president of Hubbard Broadcasting, were taken on a tour through both cities and were courted by the two Democratic mayors.

When national Democrats came to town, it was Pawlenty and Sen. Coleman's turn. In April, the mayors submitted bids simultaneously for the Democratic and Republican conventions.

By summer, talk had turned serious on both sides. Minneapolis and St. Paul had survived several cuts and were among the final contenders.

I'm hoping the NARN will be there.

Or at least rest of the guys. Me? I wanna be out on the street, covering the moonbats and protesters.

A convo, right in the heart of Franken's base? Ooooh, this is going to be fun!

Gee, New York will miss the fat, self-satisfied insurance salesman rubbernecking at all the buildings taller than 10 stories and posing for photos in front of that big hole in the ground downtown. Don't forget to plan ahead: make sure to lay in plenty of booze and make sure the hookers get their shots!

I have this vision, Clown, that you are really an immigrant from a country of tall, teutonic-looking yet fez-clad people, who learned English *entirely* by watching Phil Hartman's character on "NewsRadio".

I'm predicting a similar phenomenon as when the Promise Keepers first came to the Target Center quite a few years ago.

At the time, I was working for an agency in Butler Square - Downtown Mpls. One of my co-workers, Michael also worked as the coat check "girl" at the Salloon. For those of you not from the Twin Cities, the Salloon is a bar that caters to men who prefer the company of other men.

On the evenings that Promise Keepers was in town, there was an unexplained increase in business from men who "accidently" wandered into the bar.

The funniest thing was that throuout the night, groups of guys would wander in, look around and in a disgusted huff would leave... Only to return a short time later with a smaller group or alone.

I understand the same thing was happening at the Gay 90's - another popular establishment that caters to closeted married but gay / bi curious conservative Republican men - er um I mean gays.

"08 is going to be a freaking blast!

The PKs first came to the Dome, but thanks for playing.

Urban Legends rock, and are far more amusing when told first person.

Doug,

I call bullshit. You're passing on an old lefty wive's tale. At the most, you and your friend are thinking wishfully.

Don't forget to wear your rainbow, colored, snowcone wig that you got while covering the convention in Chicago back in '69. Hehe. Looking forward to your "man on the street" gig.

Protest Warrior is SOOOO there!!!

Keep in mind, I never said the members of Promise Keepers were the guys that wandered into the bars. I may have implied it but the fact is, there was something happening in town that night that increased visits of strangers. In case you've never been there, the Salloon is like Cheers with bad music. Everyone knows everyone else. I've never been to the 90's but I imagine it's pretty much the same.

And you're right... it was the Dome. Doesn't mean the events didn't happen. If I said the Twins won the '87 world series at Met stadium instead of the Metrodome, they still won.

In addition to my co-worker that I heard the story from, I used to do a lot of work for World Wide Pictures back then. They were the film production division of the Billy Graham Evangelical Association located on Hennepin Ave downtown. Two of my clients from WWP who were also members of Promise Keepers were telling me about this stuff happening during an edit session just a few days after it happened.

They were laughing about it.

Also, in addition to the events at the Salloon and the 90's, I hear there were allegedly some interesting parties involving alcohol that took place at the hotel attached to City Center which is only 2 blocks from the Target Center.

That's why I thought Promise Keepers was at the Target Center - Hennepin ave and the Marriot (?) seemed to be the center of some interesting activities...

"One of my co-workers, Michael also worked as the coat check "girl" at the Salloon"

So Doug, um I mean "Michael", how were the tips? Were any of them, well, kinda blunt?
You're such a tool...as it were.

Would you care to ratchet any of your stories back a little *further*, or are we close to the final draft yet?

Posted by: mitch at September 29, 2006 06:02 AM

That's all there is to tell Mitch.

But I do wonder if Mark Foley is a member of Promise Keepers?
