False Equivalence

Dick Bernard of Woodbury writes a letter to the editor that is a candidate for a Learned Footing:

On Dec. 6, 1941, with war raging around the world, the American people were apparently of no mood to join in -- until Dec. 7.

On Sept. 10, 2001, no war on terror had been declared, and the American people wouldn't have been interested in one.

Then came Sept. 11...Why should the mood be any different for Lebanese, Iraqis or people in other parts of the Arab world against the insane philosophy being exercised by the United States in this post-9/11 world?

Silly Dick.

The reason is that the Islamonazis are like the Japanese that bombed us at Pearl Harbor. They attacked the state of Israel the moment it became independent, and have been attacking the West ever since. It's been 58 years since then, 23 years since they attacked our Marine barracks in Beirut, 13 since their first attempt to bring down the World Trade Center, and five since 9/11. During all but the last five of those years, we - the West and Israel - at various times tried giving the Arabs just about everything they wanted, alternated with punishing specific ghastly trangressions. It wasn't until almost five years ago that the West - or part of it - got serious. It was as if the US waited until 1994 to respond to Pearl Harbor.

You don't bomb or threaten your way to peace; that part is crystal clear. All you are doing is ensuring that your enemy will become stronger and more determined
You also don't ram your enemy's planes into skyscrapers if you want peace.

Oh, wait. They don't want peace.

Sorry, Dick.

So Hezbollah was responsible for 9/11? Cause I thought it was Saddam. So hard to keep up...

"The reason is that the Islamonazis are like the Japanese that bombed us at Pearl Harbor."

Yup, just like it except that the Japanese attacked us strategically to cripple our Pacific fleet forces so they could take the Philippines and Indo-China while 9 guys with box cutters attacked us because we have military bases on their sacred ground and we support Israel who continue to expand settlements into Palestinian territory.

Other than that, it's identical.

It sould be noted that the stated strategy of al-Qaeda is to bleed the United States to death.

Looks like their mission is going according to their plan - thanks to General George "Custer" Bush.

This D. Bernard is probably the one who is President of the Minnesota Alliance of Peacemakers. Among their Guiding Principles:

"MAP calls for massive reductions in US military spending"

In 2002, a D. Bernard from Woodbury wrote a letter in which he said "Sept. 11 was an excuse to go t war."

"Other than that, it's identical."

Strawman. Never said the operations the same. Merely that the US and Israelis are *responding* to enemy attacks, not serving as aggressors.

"It sould be noted that the stated strategy of al-Qaeda is to bleed the United States to death."

Gosh, you mean they have a strategy? Like, to try to win? Well, we'd better just lie down and die right now, huh?

"Looks like their mission is going according to their plan - thanks to General George "Custer" Bush."

Um...ok, I'll bite. How is "getting the world's biggest power to devote all of the time and resources it can (allowing for the vagaries of its dim political opposition party) to turning you into a puddle of goo" a good thing for them?

Well Mitch, you've done what you always do. You convienently dropped the meat of Mr Bernards letter to change the context of Mr. Bernards letter.

The important part that you deceptively dropped and which delivered the point was this,

"Both events galvanized the public mood in this country -- some might say irrationally. Some others might say the mood was manipulated. Whatever the case, there was a sense of unity."

You present an abridged letter which, without the paragragh you took out, reads like someone who is blaming the United States and Israel for aggression and sympathizing with the Arabs and then you go on to implicitly justify the actions Israel and the US took because of the 23 years of crap certain Arabs have been pulling.

Talk about strawman.

Why do you always have to pull these shell games to make your point?

"How is "getting the world's biggest power to devote all of the time and resources it can (allowing for the vagaries of its dim political opposition party) to turning you into a puddle of goo" a good thing for them?"

First, who said it was and second, we have a President that is wiping his butt with our constitution. Why do you guys willingly give these terrorists everything they want?

"Why do you guys willingly give these terrorists everything they want?"

Oh, that's rich. Good humor there.

Coming from someone who agrees with John "Cut and Run" Kerry? George Bush pouring lighter fluid on the constitution and lighting it on fire with a zippo wouldn't be nearly as big of a desired prize to the islamofascists that would be the one given to them if "cut and run, cut and run, cut and run, cut and run" Kerry and Co. had their way.

"You don't bomb or threaten your way to peace; that part is chrystal clear."

Ummm...how did we beat the Nazis and the Japanese?

Hey Bill,

The Cut and Run thing? It's a clever marketing phrase with zero basis in what the Democrats have proposed. I assume you do realize that right?

Maybe you don't consider you have chosen to get your news from FOX and to follow a President who's ability to articulate foreign policy is limited to 30 second sound bites.

"The Cut and Run thing? It's a clever marketing phrase with zero basis in what the Democrats have proposed."

Zero basis. Got that, folks? ZERO BASIS:

"The Democrats' exasperation has increased in the last week, as they postponed a vote on Mr. Kerry's amendment to try to fashion a broader consensus among themselves. Democrats up for re-election asked him not to propose a fixed date. But Mr. Kerry, several Democrats said, was unwilling to budge from that idea, even though his co-sponsor, Senator Russell D. Feingold of Wisconsin, seemed willing to compromise for the sake of consensus. In the end, Mr. Kerry agreed only to extend his deadline, from Dec. 31 of this year to July 2007."

What color is the sky in your world, Doug?

If Kerry's amendment would have passed, all of the bleating by Ted Kennedy about this being Bush's "Vietnam Quagmire" would have come true, giving an instant replay of when we cut and ran from Vietnam.

Posted by: Bill C at August 2, 2006 01:52 PM

Cut and run IS a clever marketing slogan, I'll grant you that. But it is ONE HUNDRED PERCENT the truth.

Posted by: Bill C at August 2, 2006 01:54 PM

Calling the Democrats position "Cut and Run" is as dishonest as if I called 2600 dead American soldiers victims of Rumsfelds "Troop Reduction" strategy.

Things are not working and demanding more of the same is insane.

Cut and Run means we pack up our sh*t and we leave today. That's not what the Democrats are asking for and you know it.

This Cut and Run rhetoric is no different than you guys blathering on that Gore said he invented the internet or Kerry was for the war before he was against it.

You are asking for zero accountability of Bush and you're accepting what is clearly a failed ideological adventure as foreign policy.
