That Smell

I'm as outraged by the death of 10 year old Jordan Gonsioroski - apparently by scalding, allegedly at the hands of her father and stepmother - as anyone else.

And depressed, too. The story in today's Strib about her background is enough to make one long for the days when people could commit the mentally-ill that were a danger to those around them:

She said when her daughter was visiting her father before the custody change, the girl often said she didn't want to live with her dad. Jordan told her mom she wasn't allowed to go out of her room until he and Meier got up late in the morning. Jordan was used to fixing her own breakfast when she awoke in her mother's home, Johnson said...
Court records said Jordan and her younger sister were removed from the family home in Braham because Amanda Johnson was uncooperative and her home had "detrimental living conditions."

Voigt agreed her daughter's home was a mess. But she said it was brought on by Amanda's having pneumonia and a bad sinus infection, and her bipolar condition. Amanda became lethargic after unknowingly taking medicines for her maladies that shouldn't be mixed, Voigt said.

While ill, Amanda Johnson had Jordan sleep on a mattress in the living room and put her other child in a car seat nearby so she could watch them from the couch, Voigt said...But the Isanti County assistant attorney who handled Amanda Johnson's case said "it went far beyond a messy house." Amy Reed Hall said there also were chemical dependency and mental illness issues.

After the girl began visiting her father, she told him that her stepfather had sexually assaulted her.

You can almost smell that funk of burned cooking oil and unwashed bathrooms that, more than anything else, scream poverty, misery, chemical dependence, mental illness, crappy education every child in this place was born before the parents were 20.

I need a drink.

This is a subject that deserves absolutely zero snark from you, clown.

If you can't figure that out, please find another place to troll.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that all of the adults were using meth.

Was going to ask Mitch if my post on the Anti-Strib was a bit too harsh, then I read the post on KAR.

I do think we need to look at permanent removals and state run orphanages. I'd also like to see some birth control requirements for people in the child custody system. if they can't handle the ones they have, why should we support them as they churn out more?

I was taken aback by Mitch's poverty angle. Lack of money has very little to do with incredibly low morals.

"I was taken aback by Mitch's poverty angle. Lack of money has very little to do with incredibly low morals."

There was no such angle. Poverty isn't the cause. But it's a byproduct.

I was referring (perhaps not clearly enough) to the smell of poverty and misery and desperation that I recall, the place where so many of these stories start. Trailer parks, crappy houses in lousy 'hoods, places that reek of dirt and rancid food and just-plain-not-giving-a-s**t, whether from being unable or unwilling to.

These are all thoughts that went through my head when I read the story this morning. Yes, you can just smell it. Getting high, getting drunk, having sex...all more important than anything or any kid. Why do these people keep shacking up with one person after another, letting them hurt and use their children?

I'm for the orphanages coming back as well. With all the oversight nowadays, Dickensian horrors should be far easier to avoid. I can't see how the lives of so many children with these "parents" could be anything but better in an orphanage. I got a letter soliciting money for a charity that made it sound like kids in America were starving and dropping like flies in these horrible, almost-like-the Depression days. I wondered if these same starving children belonged to the 300 lb women you see them with. Why should they starve with in these times with food stamps, WIC and other government programs UNLESS they are neglected by their caregivers?

Oddly enough, I have had numerous sinus infections and never once came up with the thought to turn my daughter over to be sexually abused. I too have had pneumonia, and strange as it may seem, I did not relinquish my parental rights.
These two should fry in hell - and the mother figure and the grandmother figure who claimed "she was grandma's girl" and yet have not seen the poor girl for 14 months..... my only peace is knowing that this poor girl is now at peace - away from these moral morons.

Posted by: irishmom at July 19, 2006 08:27 PM

Those were my thoughts when it came to the Grandma. I have 6 grandkids and they would be living with me in a heartbeat if there was any of this kind of crap going on. "Grandma's girl" and the "light of their lives" my butt. Barstools and cigarettes, icky men and fake fingernails...that's where their hearts were.

"Barstools and cigarettes, icky men and fake fingernails..."

I think you just described the Elsies crowd after the big MOB gathering at Boom Island...

I didn't know you bowled Colleen?

I'm relieved to read the comments of others. The Police Reports is a PDF file that can be found on the Pioneer PRess website. It is filled with the dad and the girlfriend lying about what happened that night they murdered Jordan. Such a convoluted story of fabrications meant to blame Jordan. That Meier woman told the police that Jordan gave herself a bath at 1 am! The Dad told police that he came home at 11 am (after smoking pot at the neighbors) and found her "sunburned". When the truth really comes out, you will find that that Meier woman knocked Jordan unconscious and then scalded her in hot water to cover it up. The dad will be found culpable, too. They will both serve 40+ years in prison. By the way, the dad was 14 when he impregnated Amanda Voigt (Jordan's mom). He was 15 when Jordan was born. Amanda Voigt is probably a victim of sexual abuse herself. She dated and then married a pedophile who significantly abused her daughter. What kind of woman allows that to happen and then marries the guy? Crazy doesn't even cut it. Jordan's acting out of sexually inappropriate behaviors at 10 years of age is disturbing and deeply sad. Imagine how broken she was. Jumping jacks ain't gonna cure sexual abuse, Julie Ann Meier. Did you think of hugging Jordan, holding her and loving her as an option? Nevertheless, this case is a defense attorney's dream: a "He Said / She Said" strategy that could potentially create enough doubt in the minds of a jury that they can't charge either one with a crime. Wouldn't that be a pathetic misuse of justice? Somebody killed Jordan Gonsioroski. It was either Julie Ann Meier or the dad, Jason or both. Jordan didn't kill herself (even though that's what the girlfriend wants people to believe). Irish mom: thanks for the insights about sinus infections and pneumonia. I, too, don't think that either ones leads to having to sign over parental rights.

"This is a subject that deserves absolutely zero snark from you, clown."

What do you expect from AC? After all, he is a pro-Hussein guy. The scalding of the little girl makes him reminiscent for the torturous regime of his guy, Saddam.

So what did you do with that money that your parents set aside for your college fund, Brad? My first thought was gambling. But your stupidity is so profound, I can only assume that you must suffer from drug-induced brain damage.

Posted by: angryclown at July 22, 2006 07:19 AM

"So what did you do with that money that your parents set aside for your college fund, Brad?"

He started a "marketing company" with most of it AC but he has spent buying the tapes right Brad...

Posted by: Doug at July 22, 2006 12:52 PM

GOTCHA, AC!!!!

You have made far more insidious comments toward others to elicit the same reaction you just had. Besides, I remember your response to Mitch when he referred to the anti-war kooks as "Pro-Hussein." I knew that would get your goat.

"He started a "marketing company" with most of it AC but he has spent buying the tapes right Brad..."

I think I can decipher what you are trying to say, Doogie, given your typically poor grasp of punctuation, wording, etc.

Your remark is absurd, given the fact it's the 21st century. Tapes? I'm a CD and DVD guy.

"I think I can decipher what you are trying to say, Doogie, given your typically poor grasp of punctuation, wording, etc."

I am a drive-by snarker Brad. I usually pay closer attention to my punctuation and my..., what was that you said...? oh yeah, my "wording", when I actually write something I'm serious about.

By the way, I think the word you were looking for is "grammar".

Hello all,

I haven't gotten Jordan's picture out of my head since this story headlined. I was a good friend of the Step-mother (Julie) and am outraged that someone I knew could do something so horrible to a child.

Julie was a great person and I never imagined her do something of this nature.....

But when it comes to children being abused I am all for an eye for an eye. No child deserves to leave the world this way. She had a full life a head of her and if it weren't for bad parenting and drugs, she could have had a chance...
